Last Thursday, the long overnight queues for Hello Kitty toys at McDonald's restaurants around the island got out of order and the police had to be called in to restore the peace at some branches. Six men were arrested for various breaches of the peace. The squabble over Hello Kitty toys opens up a side of Singaporeans no one wants to see or welcomes. But, the facts are laid on the table and it's time we Singaporeans get down to asking ourselves whether the toys were worth throwing all sense of decency and good manners down the drain. Hundreds of The Straits Times readers swarmed the paper with e-mails and calls last Friday, criticising McDonald's for the long queues and squabbles over these toys, and suggesting ways to end the stuffed cat chaos. McDonald's has told the public it intends to get a bigger centralised venue for the sale of the last in the series of Hello Kitty toys, the Chinese New Year wedding pair. This is to ensure proper crowd control. It should have been done earlier! Good luck to them. This story may not end here yet. We'll soon see. Yellow Pages now has an online auction service at their website. From today, there's no need for you to hunt the island for the best bargains. All you need to do is to register at their website first and then name your price for the items you want to buy by placing a bid. Items available for bidding range from 3Com Palm V connected organisers, Ariston washing machines, Aiwa VCD players, and Canon EOS 300 cameras to Motorola V2088 Dualband mobilephones. Only one unit of each auction item is available. The bidder who bids the highest bid will win. Winners are obligated to buy the item at the highest bid. If more than one bidder bids the highest bid, then the one who placed the bid first gets the item.
