Written Answer to Parliamentary Question on (a) how many convictions were there for offences under section 143 of the Penal Code; and (b) of these, how many were sentenced to imprisonment and how many were sentenced to 5 or more months of imprisonment for each of the last ten years, 22 May 2007

Mr Siew Kum Hong:
To ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs for each of the last ten years
(a) how many convictions were there for offences under section 143 of the Penal Code; and
(b) of these, how many were sentenced to imprisonment and how many were sentenced to 5 or more months of imprisonment.
Mr Wong Kan Seng:
The number of persons convicted, imprisoned and those who were sentenced to 5 months imprisonment or more under Section 143 (Punishment for unlawful assembly) of the Penal Code, for the last 10 years (1997 to 2006), is provided in the table below.
