Diploma in Fine Art (Ceramics Major) 每 Mr Deryk Cameron Stronach,
Scottish (49 yrs old)

Arm Lock, Buff Raku,
Ceramics, Deryk Cameron Stronach, 2005
Visitors to the NAFA will invariably mistake Deryk Cameron
Stronach as a NAFA staff because he looks a lot more matured
than his classmates. At 49, Deryk has been to 38 countries, worked
in 12 and lived in six. On a fateful day at the Sussex Police Force
in Britain a few years ago, he found himself literally covered in
sweat and blood working on several homicide cases. Exhausted, he
decided to call it a day. Deryk sent in his resignation and embarked
on his journey to Singapore with his Singaporean wife. Here, he
decided to take on something that he has always wanted to do but has
been perpetually put off 每 pursuing his passion in the arts. Three
years as a Ceramics major and he has mastered the best of East and
West. With his judo-inspired fighting figure series, he successfully
captured the power of the human spirit within each pair of the clay
figures. Here, he has cleverly implied the presence of the human
forms under the judo costume without actual depiction of human
figures.

Diploma in Fine Art (Painting Major) 每 Mr Gibbson Ang, Chinese (23
yrs old)
Gibbson Ang
has an interesting past evident in his body of tattoos. He is also
not an unfamiliar face for those who are fans of Singapore Mandarin
television dramas. Always typecast as a hooligan on TV, Gibson*s day
job as an art student cannot be further from fiction. His
sensitivity towards the depiction of human figures: the nuances,
gestures and expressions, belie his colourful life. His close study
of the Classical methods reveals key understanding of Western Art,
especially the use of the human figure and body in relation to
perception and interpretation.

Diploma in Visual Communication (Graphic Design Major) 每 Ms Phuah
Li-Fang, Chinese (24 yrs old)
Li-Fang
obtained a Bachelor of Arts with Merit from National University of
Singapore with a double major in Mathematics and Information &
Communications Management prior to enrolling in NAFA. Coming to NAFA
with no art background, she has had to work hard on her drawing
skills and hone her sensitivity to aesthetics and colour. However,
her background in mathematics came in advantageous, especially in
layout and typography. She chose to come to NAFA because the course
structure is well-balanced and provides her with sufficient
technical and conceptual skills needed for working in the real
world. The internship programme in her third year put what she
learnt to the test. She is then able to do more work, without
spending unnecessary time on learning the technical aspects of
production or software usage.
