Robber who fired gun faces death penalty if convicted

Update on Man Arrested for Armed Robbery

Two men will be commended for their bravery and public spiritedness in apprehending a robber armed with a gun at Sun Plaza yesterday (7 Feb 2006) evening.
The culprit was wearing a cap and a wig had his face covered with a pair of lady¡¯s stockings when he robbed the cashier of the 4-D outlet at Sun Plaza on 7 Feb 2006.
Rojion Bin Shariff, the 50-year-old security guard managed to detain the culprit after a chase with the assistance of a 37-year-old Naval officer who was at the basement carpark. During the pursuit, the culprit fired a shot.
The accused, a 59-year-old unemployed man will be charged in court tomorrow for an offence of unlawful discharge of firearm. He will be remanded for further investigations. If convicted, he would face the death penalty.
Director of Criminal Investigation Department, SAC Lock Wai Han, commended both men for their public spiritedness, alertness and bravery that led to the prompt arrest of the suspect. SAC Lock said, ¡°Once again, this case highlights the close partnership the police have with the public, which is crucial to ensure a safe and secure community in Singapore . In such situations, the public should ensure that their safety is not compromised; alternatively, they can provide the description and details of the culprit to the police immediately."

Man Arrested for Armed Robbery
A 59-year-old Chinese man was arrested by Police yesterday (7 Feb 2006) evening in connection to an armed robbery that occurred at Sun Plaza Shopping Centre.
On 7 Feb 2006 at about 9.15pm , Police received a call informing of an armed robbery at NTUC located at Basement 1 of the shopping centre. The suspect had earlier pointed the pistol at a cashier of a 4D outlet and robbed her of a bag containing the day¡¯s takings. The security guard on duty went in pursuit upon hearing the cashier¡¯s shout of ¡°robbery¡±.
The suspect fled towards the carpark at Basement 2 with the security guard giving chase. During the pursuit, a shot was fired by the suspect. The security guard managed to detain the suspect at the Basement 2 carpark with the assistance of a public-spirited member of public. The suspect was then handed over to the Police. Investigations are in progress.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Superintendent Jessica Kwok, said, ¡°We thank the member of public and the security guard for coming to aid the victim and their quick action, and also assisting the Police in detaining the suspect. However, we would like to advise the public that they should not risk their lives while doing so.¡±

Inmate Dies in Prison

On 20 Jun 06 at about 11.15am, an inmate of Queenstown Remand Prison, 59-year-old, Chan Bing Chaw, was found hanging inside the cell with a T-shirt around his neck. The T-shirt was secured to a ventilation grille located on the wall above the cell door.

He was pronounced dead at about 11.45am.

Police are investigating into the case of unnatural death.
