Senior Minister of State's reply to
Parliamentary Question for MHA during Parliament Sitting on 16 May 2005 on
whether the Government is aware of Singaporeans who go overseas to engage in
sex with minors and how many cases have come to the attention of the
authorities |
Ms Eunice Elizabeth Olsen: |
To ask the Minister for Home Affairs if the
Government is aware of Singaporeans who go overseas to engage in sex with
minors and, if so, how many cases have come to the attention of the
authorities. |
SMS A/P Ho Peng Kee: |
Based on information provided by the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs (MFA), there have been 3 cases of Singaporeans arrested
overseas for sexual offences involving persons under 16 years of age between
the period 1994 and April 2005. |
MFA is notified when Singaporeans arrested
overseas for such offences seek assistance from our overseas missions, or when
the foreign law enforcement agencies choose to inform our overseas missions of
such cases. |
However, not all overseas cases of child-sex
offences by Singaporeans may be brought to the attention of our overseas
missions by the local authorities. |
