Dome Literary Readings: Friendships

February’s
Dome Literary Readings, organised by The Centre for the Arts, will explore the
theme of Friendships in a one-hour session offering a tasty array of poetry,
fiction and drama bites, plus creative musings of the subject by the guest
writers.

Dome
Literary Readings is a platform consisting of one-hour sessions offering
poetry, prose or drama readings by leading personalities, established and
newer writers. The series is a means of showcasing the literary arts and
highlighting current creative work in poetry, fiction and drama as well as
sustaining the development of a discerning interest in literature –
especially Singapore writing.

About the
writers:
|
|
Meira Chand, of Indian Swiss parentage,
was born and educated in London. She is the author of seven novels whose
themes examine the conflict of cultures. In 1962 she went to live in Japan
and, except for a break of five years in India, remained there until 1997 when
she moved to Singapore and now currently lives. She is an associate member of
The Centre for the Arts, NUS and was recently Chairperson for the Commonwealth
Writers Prize for the region of South East Asia and South Pacific. She will be
a Writer-in Residence at Mansfield College Oxford in 2004 and is presently
working on a new novel set in Singapore.

Gwee Li Sui is the author of the
graphic novel Myth of the Stone (1993) and the book of poems Who
Wants to Buy a Book of Poems? (1998). He lectures at the Department of
English Language and Literature in the National University of Singapore.

Aaron Lee Soon Yong is a prize-winning Singaporean poet and author of a collection of poems,
A Visitation of Sunlight (Ethos
Books, 1997). He is also the co-editor of the landmark anthology entitled No
Other City: the Ethos Anthology of Urban Poetry (Ethos Books, 2000) and Love
Gathers All: the Philippines-Singapore Anthology of Love Poetry (Ethos
Books, 2002). Lee's work has appeared in publications such as Rhythms:
a Millennial Anthology of Poetry (Singapore), Papertiger
(Australia) and Anglistik (Germany).
In addition to promoting Singaporean poetry through his writing seminars and
workshops, he works as a lawyer in the aviation industry. He will be reading a
selection of published and new poems.

Jean Tay graduated in 1997 with a
double-degree in creative writing and economics from Brown University, USA.
For her fiction, she was awarded the Weston Prize for Fiction from Brown, as
well as the 1st and 3rd prizes from the National Arts Council's (NAC) Golden
Point Short Story competition in 1995 and 2001 respectively. Her plays have
been produced in festivals in the US and in Singapore. They include Plunge,
Hopper's Women (co-written with Cindy Koh), Water from the Well, and The
Knot.

Angeline
Yap has
been contributing poetry to various publications such as
More Than Half the Sky, Love
Gathers All (Ethos Books, Singapore & Anvil Publishing, Manila), the Atlanta
Review (USA), the Quarterly Literary Review, (Singapore) and the
inaugural issue of Fulcrum (Cambridge, Massachussets, USA).
Her poems have been translated into Tamil and Mandarin, and set to
music for performance by choirs in Singapore and overseas. She has also
mentored young writers through the Creative Arts Programme (NUS and Gifted
Education Programme, Ministry of Education) and the NAC's Mentor Access
Project, as well as through school visits.

Yong Shu Hoong is the author of two books of poetry – Isaac, which was adapted from a collection short listed for the 1995
Singapore Literature Prize; and his latest, dowhile (read as "do-while"). For almost three years
running, he organises the monthly subTEXT reading, first at the Gallery Hotel
and currently at The Book Café. He has been invited to readings and literary
festivals held in Hong Kong, Australia, the UK and the US.
