This July, Esplanade is presenting
its hugely successful BayBeats festival. In its third year, this alternative
and indie music festival will showcase the freshest bands from Singapore and
abroad, jamming at Esplanade's Waterfront from 16 - 18 July 2004.
|
BayBeats will showcase 35 bands
this year - 13 foreign and 22 local, in a blistering lineup that includes top
Singaporean acts such as The Observatory, Electrico, and aspidistra fly. Other
local bands include Surreal, Astreal,
Force Vomit, My Squared Circle, Pensionstate, Phorous, Typewriter, Objection
Overule, 59 Minutes, Kate of Kale, Pug Jelly, Sky In Euphoria, and Vertical
Rush.
|
International acts feature Last
Days of April, Blueline Medic, and Kenneth Ishak (of indie-rock quartet
Beezewax). In addition, Esplanade will also
welcome Whence He Came (Hong Kong), SuperMarket Hero (Australia),
Buddhiston (Japan) and Venus Butterfly (Thailand). Closer home,
Malaysian bands include Couple, Seven-collar T-shirt, Furniture, Aloe In
The Bottle, Telebury, Love Me Butch, MUZE and Sgt.Weener’s
Arm.
|
New to BayBeats this year is a
visual arts component - highlights include British photographer Brian Rasics
Home-Grown Star, and an on-site work in progress by Delta, a pioneer in the
European graffiti scene.
|
During BayBeats, an on-site
work in progress by Delta – a pioneer in the European graffiti scene –
will unfold at Esplanade’s Concourse. Developed specifically for Esplanade,
graffiti takes on a new dimension as contemporary artform.
|
Performances during BayBeats will
mostly be held at Esplanade’s outdoor venues, stage@Powerhouse and Outdoor
Theatre. stage@Powerhouse will feature headlining bands, while the Outdoor
Theatre serves as chill out stage for groups that require an intimate setting.
Acoustic and electronic performances will be hosted indoors at the Concourse.
|
Band performances are slated for
the late afternoons and evenings while a host of workshops take place earlier
in the day, as part of Esplanade’s efforts to encourage jamming sessions and
interaction between local and international bands to broaden musical
perspectives. Film and multimedia will also be used to highlight the changing
facets of music-making.
