The Artistic Planning Committee (APC) of WASBE International (World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) will convene in Singapore from 16 to 18 July 2004 to finalize the programme for the 12th WASBE International Conference.

The 10-member strong APC headed by Mr Dennis Johnson, President of WASBE International, comprises renowned international composers, educators and conductors (See Annex A for APC members who will be in Singapore for meeting).

WASBE is the only non-profit international organization for wind band conductors, composers, performers, publishers, teachers, instrument makers and friends of wind music.

It is dedicated to enhancing the quality of wind ensemble playing around the world as well as encouraging members to explore new and different repertoire from a variety of musical cultures.

WASBE Singapore Chapter, with support from the Singapore Tourism Board, National Arts Council and the National Institute of Education, has successfully bid to host the 12th WASBE International Conference to be held in 10 to 16 July 2005.

The Patron for the Conference is Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Acting Minister for Education. The WASBE Singapore Chapter is led by Dr Lee Tian Tee, an established music educator and band director with a dedicated team of 16 outstanding Singaporean music educators, composers, conductors and musicians (See Annex B for list of members).

The theme for the 2005 conference is the ‘Confluence of the Arts’, the sharing and promotion of the varying cultures of participating countries through the common medium of wind bands and ensembles.

In keeping with the theme, participants will be bringing with them a kaleidoscope of music, instruments and ideas that best reflects their cultural and musical heritage.

The Conference is expected to attract 1000 delegates from 40 countries. In addition, 14 wind ensembles from 10 different countries will perform and 40 music companies from around the world will participate in the exhibition. Attendance is expected to exceed 100 000 (See Annex C for preliminary information on the 12th WASBE International Conference).

Masterclass on Conducting:

To fully tap into the expertise of the APC, a conducting masterclass will be held on Monday 19 July 2004, 10 am at the National Institute of Education, Recital & Ensemble Room, Visual and Performing Arts Academic Group.

This will present an excellent opportunity for teachers and band directors to learn firsthand from established music educators. The masterclass also aims to introduce a variety of methods of music teaching and learning for wind and symphonic band ensembles.

Fees: $15 (WASBE Members) , $30 (Non Members). To register, please contact Ms Sing Moh Li at 67455802, 98295944 or email Sing.Moh.Li@wasbe.org.sg
