Worksite Accident in Ayer Rajah; 2 killed & 29 injured

At about 1.40 pm (29 Apr 2004), Police and SCDF were informed of a worksite accident at Dover Road and Ayer Rajah Road.

Resources have been deployed at the scene. So far, 29 workers have been reported injured and have been conveyed to hospital. All are reported to be in stable condition.

One worker was found dead at the accident site. He is a 31 year-old Bangladeshi construction worker who has been holding a work permit pass since March 2004. Efforts are now being made to notify his next-of-kin. Search and rescue operations are continuing. (Source: Singapore Police Force Media Release 29 Apr 2004)

Upon being alerted by the police, BCA engineers went to the site to investigate. Workers were fixing steel bars for a 5m-thick raft foundation for the basement. Initial investigation revealed that the top layer of steel bars for the reinforcement cage of the foundation fell onto the workers below. The steel chairs supporting the top layer steel bars had apparently given way. The cause of this is still under investigation.

This incident is localised within the construction site. The site is on good ground. Visual inspection of the retaining wall reveals that the wall is intact. The adjacent INSEAD building, disused army camp and road (Ayer Rajah Avenue) are not affected by this incident. BCA is monitoring the situation.
