Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay
announced today (16 Aug 2004) the launch of a new music series, SoAsia,
which kicks off Thursday August 19.
|
The series will be held at
Esplanade’s Recital Studio, in an intimate setting to encourage and enhance
interaction between artists and audiences.
|
SoAsia, short for Sounds of
Asia, showcases the diversity of contemporary Asian music through the unique
fusion of ethnic harmonies and modern rhythms.
|
Said Belinda Choi, SoAsia’s
Programming Officer, "As music audiences mature, they are able to better
appreciate and enjoy diverse forms of music. Esplanade is offering a sonic
journey through the world's most complex region, and in presenting SoAsia,
hopes to reflect the verve and spirit of contemporary Asian music today, and
to expand cultural palates for an even wider audience."
|
SoAsia launches with Yat-Kha,
a bone-shaking, electrifying band from one of the most remote parts of the
planet – the Tuva Republic in Southern Siberia. Critically acclaimed, Yat-Kha
has won awards such as Best Artist - Asia Pacific in the BBC Radio 3
Awards for World Music, the Brian Eno Special Prize at the Voices of Asia
festival in Khazhakstan, and the Grand Jury Prize from Radio France
International's Rock and Pop in the East.
|
Yat-Kha’s unique sound
stems from its extraordinary blend of traditional "Khoomei" throat
singing (vocal technique which allows the singer to hold more than one note
simultaneously) and modern rock and punk.
|
The diversity of the SoAsia series
will be reflected in its eclectic line-up of shows. The inaugural performance
with Yat-Kha this month – a rock concert - gives way to Deva Premal
& Miten, a meditation music performance in November, combining ancient
mantras, rich harmonies and sensual rhythms for a truly transcendental
tapestry of sound.
|
