In Singapore

Blue chips in Singapore roar back to life yesterday after the Dow soared a stunning 500 points - its biggest one-day gain ever.

Work permit allocations for the construction industry will be cut further on 1 Apr 2000 to reduce its reliance on unskilled and semi-skilled foreign workers.

With immediate effect, the government will allow all " direct insurers " to enter the local insurance industry. Also, the 49% cap on foreign ownership of local insurers will be lifted, said the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Asia

Taipei: Tension at a high as Taiwan goes to polls.

Dalby, Australia: A woman went on trial yesterday, accused of raping a man in what is believed to be the first such case in Australia. A Crown prosecutor told a court here that Zoe Dawes raped the 24-year-old man after he was tied at gunpoint to the verandah railing of a house at Miles, in southeast Queensland and stripped.

Around the world

New York: An unarmed man was shot dead by an undercover detective during a fight in a busy Manhattan street, in yet another shooting by police that is set to spark public outrage.
