Hence, the law has to be strict to be effective in eradicating the problem. Under the Immigration Act, the home owner is liable to be charged for harbouring immigration offenders in his/her house if investigations reveal that he/she has not exercised due diligence as required by law. If the home owner is found guilty of the offence, he/she shall be sentenced to an imprisonment of not less than six months and up to two years and shall also be liable to a fine of up to S$6000. The jail sentence is mandatory!

Therefore, home owners will do well to check carefully the proper documents and verify the particulars of their prospective foreign tenants. Follow the steps:

1. Inspect the original travel and identification documents of your prospective foreign tenant.

2. See that the passport of your foreign tenant is legally endorsed with immigration or work pass.

3. Inspect the original copy of the work pass, compare the particulars stated in the work pass with that in the passport if the foreigner claims that he is working here.

4. Check the foreigner's status with the employer as shown in the respective work pass

If you need to verify further the immigration status of your prospective tenant (foreigner), you may call the SIR at Tel: (65) 391 6100 during office hours. In the case of a foreigner working in Singapore, you may check with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) at Tel: (65) 1800-438 5122 on the validity of the work pass.
