Singapore Express
Singapore Express, a project
organised by Designers Association of Singapore (DAS) in
partnership with MICA, is one of a series of projects to encourage
greater participation in celebrating Singapore*s 40th
year of independence and promote greater expression of children*s
artistic energies.
Singapore Express invited
Primary 5 children from 42 participating schools island-wide to
create fresh and innovative designs to decorate various modes of
transport (buses, taxi cabs, a train) as well as bus-stops based
on the theme &Happy Birthday Singapore!*.
Around 12,000 children received design activity kits specially
designed by top DAS designers. The kits, each comprising a CD-ROM,
were designed to provide the children with a basic tutorial on
design, and guidelines on how to design decorations for the modes
of transport and bus-stops.
Unlike traditional National Day
buntings and banners, the project's designs will be 'mobile' and
will travel across Singapore on the vehicles they adorn. The
project hopes to raise design awareness and encourage creativity
amongst school children, as well as profile and promote the
designs of young Singaporeans.
The participating schools worked
on this project over six weeks. Seven winning designs were
selected in June by a panel comprising DAS designers and the
project*s sponsors.
Winning entrants have been
notified through their respective schools, and are working closely
with designers to translate their designs into actual decorations
for the different modes of transport. Decorated vehicles will be
unveiled at Boon Lay Way (opposite Boon Lay MRT Station) on 31
July (Sun) at 10am by Mr Tharman
Shanmugratnam, Minister for Education,
and will ply routes island-wide for three months.

All
Things Bright and Beautiful: Prints by Young Singaporeans
※All Things Bright and
Beautiful: Prints by Young Singaporeans§ is a collection of
handmade prints and special edition portfolios that were produced
by a group of 50 school children aged 8 to 9 years old. The
project, organised by the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI)
and supported by MICA, was aimed at giving young Singaporeans the
opportunity to contribute to the National Day celebrations in a
creative way. An exhibition of the prints will be held at Paragon
Shopping Centre from July 29 to Aug 10. Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister
for Information, Communications and the Arts, will officiate the
opening of the exhibition.
The school children were
selected from primary schools recommended by the National Arts
Council for their interest in art. Of the 50 participating
children, 10 were chosen for the production of the special edition
portfolio. All the prints were produced using the glue gun
collograph printing technique.
To contribute to the needs of
the less fortunate, and to forge a greater sense of national
belonging, 60 prints and 100 portfolios will be put up for sale,
with proceeds going to children*s charities supported by Community
Chest. The charities are AWWA Special School,
Katong School, Canossian
School, MINDS
Guillemard Gardens School, Rainbow Centre
Balestier Special School and
Care Corner Family Service Centre (Queenstown). Each individual
print will be sold for $200, and each portfolio will be priced at
$3000. The project aims to raise $300,000 to be equally
distributed amongst the charities.
To view pictures of the prints,

www.happybirthday.org.sg. Members of the public interested in
purchasing the prints are encouraged to do so through the contact

MICA would like to record its
appreciation of Paragon shopping centre for their kind sponsorship

Paint
Singapore
Paint Singapore is a mural
painting project organised by Aljunied
Town Council and North East CDC, and proudly supported by MICA.
This community involvement project involves school students
working together with residents from the
Aljunied district to paint 9 large murals on large wooden
panels measuring 16 by 8 feet. The murals will be displayed in
public areas in the Aljunied-Hougang
neighbourhood for a year as part of this year*s National Day
celebrations.
Aimed at encouraging greater
involvement of Singaporeans in celebrating the nation*s 40th
anniversary, the murals give schools and residents the opportunity
to express their individuality, artistic creativity and heritage.
Paint Singapore also seeks to foster artistic vibrancy in our
heartland while bringing different members of the community
together.
The schools involved in this
project are:
Damai
Secondary School,
Bedok
North Secondary School, Bowen Secondary School,
Yuying
Secondary School,
Xinmin
Secondary School and ITE Bedok. These
schools conceptualised the designs according to themes celebrating
life in Singapore. Some of the themes include Faces of Singapore,
Heritage Link and Gracious City.
The murals will be completed at
a painting event held on 3 July 2005 (Sunday) at
Kovan Hub. During the day-long
community event, close to 200 students will paint the murals
together with over 400 residents.
The murals will be officially
unveiled on 9 July (Saturday) by Mr Yatiman
Yusof, Senior Parliamentary Secretary,

Decorate Singapore
Started with the aim of getting
Singaporean youth involved in this year*s 40th National
Day celebrations, Decorate Singapore is a banner and bunting
design competition open to all junior college, polytechnic, art
institution and university students in Singapore.
Guided by the theme &Celebrate
Singapore*, students were encouraged to boldly incorporate
Singapore*s national symbols, such as the flag, the lion head or
the national orchid in their designs. The project has provided an
excellent opportunity for students to express their national
identity and contribute their talents to the National Day
celebrations.
To give the winners a platform
to showcase their creative works, the winning designs will be used
to produce banners and buntings for display in MICA Building. With
the distribution of these designs to various grassroots
organisations for their use, Singaporeans can also expect to see
these new buntings at various public buildings island-wide.
The following winning designs
