A focussed range of
programs, including combined degrees, will be offered by UNSW
Singapore. It is envisaged that half of the student load will be in
the science/engineering areas, where the initial focus will be on
technology, IT, electrical engineering, telecommunications and
possibly chemical engineering.
In the humanities and social sciences, the initial focus will be on
commerce, languages, Asian studies, Australian studies, media and
communications and fine arts.
"We look forward to working with the Government of Singapore
and the existing universities to position Singapore as one of the
top five English-speaking destination countries for international
students," Professor Ingleson said.
"This alliance is a significant step forward in servicing the
growing educational demands of students in the region as well as
attracting non-Asian students to Singapore to gain an important
Asian orientation."
Speaking from Sydney, UNSW Chancellor, Dr John Yu, said that the
University was attracted to the project because of the Singapore
Government's far-sighted strategic vision for education.
"UNSW supports the globalisation of education and is delighted
to be establishing its first offshore campus in Singapore and with a
government that has mapped out a long-term and sustainable blueprint
to offer education and research of the highest quality," Dr Yu
said.
"UNSW will work in partnership with the established Singapore
universities, the prestigious polytechnic sector, local schools and
colleges and other foreign universities in realising the Singapore
Government's vision."
UNSW is one of Australia's premier universities and leading
international education providers with the largest on-campus
enrolment of international students in the world.
