The NUS Jazz Band throws up a night of live jazz for all loose limbed jazz enthusiasts and will pay tribute to Nat King Cole through music and vocal songs.  Lindy hop dancers will takeover the dance floor and audiences are invited to join in the fun!

Destiny by NUS Symphony Orchestra

The NUS Symphony Orchestra presents Verdi’s La Forza Del Destino Overture as well as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Op. 67 in C minor.  Award winning 16-year-old violin prodigy from China, Ms Yang Tianwa, will be performing the Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor with the orchestra in this feast for the senses.

Soiree 2004 by NUS Harmonica Band

Soiree 2004 will see the premiere of The Witch's Daughter by James Moody, Anton Dvorak's Romanze and Voices of Spring by Johann Strauss.  The highlight of the concert is the Dance of the Yao People, a highly charged traditional Chinese composition by Liu Tie Shan and Mao Yuan.

In Two Worlds by NUS Rondalla and The Pipers’ Guild @ NUS

Delicately blending the Old with the New, the NUS Rondalla breathes new life into early instruments such as the banduria, laud and the mandolin. The group performs music with a Latin flavour – Cuban, Mexican and Spanish. To reflect this genre of music, some songs from the Buena Vista Social Club have been specially re-arranged for the occasion. Also included will be mambo and cha-cha music to keep your feet tapping along.

The Pipers’ Guild@NUS presents music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Performing exuberant and lively music from composers such as Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, audiences will see period instruments such as recorders, harpsichord, viola da gamba (similar to the cello) and archlute (similar to the guitar) being used. Programme includes a post-show talk on Rondalla.

Gaana Yatra (Musical Journey) by NUS Indian Instrumental Ensemble

Gaana Yatra (Musical Journey) offers traditional Indian music arranged and composed for veena, sitar, tabla, and Indian violin.  Highlights include a segment by the newly-formed choral group in which both Carnatic and Hindustani vocalists come together to present traditional Indian songs sung in parts (alto, soprano, baritone, tenor, bass) much like the Western choral-style.  The ensemble will perform four new compositions of which one is a fun piece written by Mohan Vaithiya.  The performers will also use their traditional instruments to recreate Chinese and Malay sounds.

The Chinese Orchestra has lined up 5 concertos with the liuqin, dizi, erhu, guzheng and percussion ensemble.  The highlight of the evening is an ambitious work Tai Yang (The Sun) featuring the percussion ensemble on eight sets of timpani and an assortment of Western & Chinese percussion.

TOUCH 2004 by Piano Ensemble

One of the few performing groups in Singapore that actively promotes the concept of piano "ensemble" music, the NUS Piano Ensemble will play piano duets (four hands) and two-piano works.  Highlights will include pieces by 20th century French composers Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré.

 

GENUS 2004 by NUS Guitar Ensemble

The NUS Guitar Ensemble offers an eclectic programme on Niibori guitars from classical, flemenco, jazz to contemporary music and beyond.  Hear their creative interpretations of At the Hunt, Tanquillo de Cadiz, Mononoke Hime, Danza Flamenca and many other familiar guitar favourites.
