EIGHT NEW JUNIOR SPORTS
ACADEMIES TO DEVELOP YOUNG SPORTING TALENTS |
|
Eight new Junior Sports Academies (JSAs)
will be set up in 2009 to provide budding primary school athletes
with high quality programmes in seven sporting areas such as table
tennis, badminton, fencing and shooting. Resources are collectively
harnessed at these academies to provide systematic training to
realise the athletes’ full potential. |
Young athletes who are identified for
the different sports will receive training at these centralised
sports academies. An estimated 200 young athletes will be developed
with the establishment of the new JSAs. |
The eight new JSAs will be based in the

Background |
The Ministry of Education announced the
launch of its Talent Development Framework for Sports in December
2007 to systematically identify and provide development
opportunities for talented young athletes within the school system. |
Students talented in sports will be
given appropriate provisions to realise their full potential. |
There are three key strategies; |
a. Developing talented athletes in
primary schools through MOE Junior Sports Academies; |
b. Enhancing support for the Singapore
Schools Sports Teams; and |
c. Enhancing resources for schools’
talent development efforts. |
In 2008, MOE piloted four Junior Sports
Academies in each zone. In the North, academies for netball,
swimming, table tennis and track and field was based at the
Singapore Sports School while in the South Zone, an academy for
table-tennis was set up at the Singapore Table Tennis Association.
Chung Cheng High Main housed the academy for Wushu in the East while
Henry Park Primary School housed the badminton academy in the West.
A total of 260 young athletes have been trained in these areas. |
