Founded in 1886 by Englishman William Oldham who used cash donations from his friends to convert a shophouse in Amoy Street into a school for 13 pupils. Because English was taught in the morning, and Chinese in the afternoon, the school came to be known as Anglo Chinese School.

Produced two Queen's Scholars:

  - H.A.D. Moores (1894)

  - Robert Hosington (1897)

Opened its secondary school in Cairnhill in 1928.

Moved to Barker Road in 1950.

A-Level classes moved to the new Anglo Chinese Junior College in 1977.

Illustrious former ACS boys:

  - Dr GOH Keng Swee, former Minister

  - Gen. Winston CHOO, former Armed Forces Chief
