It's 4 days to the next Millennium.

It's the 3rd day of Christmas today!

Get for me: Monday with the Editor

    Hallo everyone,

The Christmas Saturday holiday is just over in Singapore and this coming Saturday, we get to meet the New Year holiday. And the Saturday thereafter, on 8 Jan 2000, we also get to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa or the end of the one-month fasting period for Muslims. Three Saturdays of holidays, one after another. It's no wonder everyone is in a holiday mood. But, many also lament the waste of public holidays on Saturdays! Those who work half a day here in Singapore get only half a day's respite from work and those who work five-day weeks do not get anything at all.

Fret not, lest we tend to forget, let us remember that when we cross the finishing line for 1999, we are among the fortunate few who have managed to live to meet the next millennium (let's take year 2000 to be the next millennium and therefore skip the debate over the actual millennium). Having said that, I would like to suggest we all spend a solitary moment to ponder over the fragility of life. Each year, we get to say goodbye to the old year and hello to the next; after a while it is taken as a given. But, when we look around us and read about the untimely demise of others, we realise, albeit for a short time, time is finite and precious. So it is with much urgency that we should seize each day and live it to the fullest as if there is no tomorrow. Only then will we be able, when we have grown older, to look back and say "No regrets whatsover".

So it is my wish, on this last Monday before the next Millennium, to see everyone of us get through to the next Millennium safely. Please drink less liquor, at least for the next week, so we can all cross over together safely and happily.

Please have a very happy and prosperous New Year.
