CHIJMES stages Singapore's first Irish Festival

     Back to FrontPage

Gaelic Storm is a visiting performance group of musicians, dancers, singers, actors, storytellers and workshop leaders from Ireland. Its main aim is to promote the enjoyment of Literature and Theatre from its locale.

The Irish play, "The Playboy of the Western World" was first produced in 1907 and has sent shock waves through the dramatic world, pushing the limits of decency and stoking an already red-hot nationalistic fire. Though met with near instant rioting and controversy; it is now considered a masterpiece of poetic drama. It tells of a young man who endears himself to a small town with his tale of how he killed his violent father in self defense and how a young woman innkeeper agrees to shelter him in secret. The story gets out and his mystique grows.

Other highlights of the festival include Ceili (traditional Irish dance displays), recitations of plays and poetry workshops on Irish Theatre and culture, enriching Irish Tours, band performances by Tailtean and musical performances. In addition to visual treats, Father Flanagan's Irish Pub, the official pub & restaurant for the festival will also whip up a variety of traditional and tantalizing Irish food & beverage to entice visitors. The gastronomical treats include Draught Guinness, Kilkenny Cream Ale, Jameson Irish Whisky, Air Flown Oysters, Irish Stew, Beef and Guinness Pie and Irish Coffee!
