Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Goodbye 2000! Celebrate with a party at Suntec
Goodbye
2000
Hello 2001!
|
It's New Year's Eve
and the last day of 2000! Celebrate the coming of 2001
with a big-bang party at any of the following three places
here in Singapore: Suntec City, Sentosa and Downtown East.
|
The biggest party is at
Suntec City, where the World's Biggest Fountain is
located. It is expected to draw a crowd of 80,000. Expect
performances by Mardi Gras; local entertainers, such as
Shayn Phua, Jai and Joe Pang; and a fireworks display. Countdown
2001 starts at 7pm and finishes about 2am. If you
can't make it, enjoy the event on the Internet - watch a
webcast "live". Click HERE.
|
Don't worry about
transport home. Tonight, MRT trains run till about 1am.
The last LRT leaves Choa Chu Kang at 2am. Selected SBS and
TIBs bus services run till 1.30am. If you miss them, just
do what the others are doing - camp out in the streets
till daybreak 2001. Don't forget to wish everyone you meet
"Happy New Year!"
|
One last thing, make
sure you are around to meet the 21st Century tomorrow, so If
You Drink, Don't Drive.
