Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Do you own any website Domain Name yet? I already own 5 such names. Let me list them down - getforme.com, singaporevisitor.com, singaporecemetery.com, sporescity.com and thecolapluscompany.com.

Just why am I telling you all this? Well, it all has to do with dreams and turning such dreams into reality. Back in November 1999, I was playing around on the keyboard at the DOMAIN SEARCH page of a website I had surfed into. And I was trying my luck at finding a suitable Domain Name.

You see, I didn't want to be left out of the crowd - many people in the streets already owned at least one Domain Name. My fingers punched GetForMe.com and the search result told me this name was still available.

At that point of time, I didn't know why I pressed the REGISTER button. Frankly, I didn't know what I was going to do with this GetForMe.com Domain Name. Before I knew it, I had already owned it for USD70. That was November 1999. In the following weeks, having owned a Domain Name, I set into action making sure I had spent the US$70 wisely. I launched Getforme.com as THE SINGAPORE PORTAL - featuring anything on Singapore. I spent much time and effort realising a dream that floated as I was trying my luck at the Domain Search page. In the next two months, I decided to make full use of the GetForMe part of the Domain Name and replaced The Singapore Portal name with GET FOR ME SINGAPORE.

Today, eight months later, the GetForMe.com website is 1196 pages thick and has attracted a larger crowd of visitors from Singapore and around the world. So you see, this website came out of nothing but a dream and a Domain Name. Wouldn't you also want to try your hand at finding out if that Domain Name you desire so much is still available? Wouldn't you also want to become an owner of a website? Nothing is impossible - it just needs a lot of hard work - but more importantly, it needs you to take that first step, which is to go to our DOMAIN SEARCH page and try your luck.

Some Domain Names are just plain goldmines - SingaporeVisitor.com, for instance, brings in some 500 new unique visitors to this website every month without me even having to lift a finger. It seems many people out there do not bother using search engines and will just type what they are looking for into the URL and then hit ENTER. Well, these chaps typed SingaporeVisitor.com and found relevant information instantly. Have you found such a Domain Name yet? Keep trying - I did and struck gold!

We received our 400,000th hit on 22 Aug 2000!

All CPF money in the special accounts savings can be invested, from 1 Jan 2001, in low-risk retirement- related financial instruments. CPF members can also use the minimum sum, currently, at S$65,000, to invest in financial products, such as deferred annuities, government and statutory board bonds and selected unit trusts and investment-linked insurance products. Investment profits from the special accounts savings cannot be withdrawn. Withdrawal of profits from the ordinary accounts will be phased out intwo years.

Two foreign S-league footballers were charged with corruption yesterday. Australian Mirko Jurilj, 26, a defender from Sembawang Rangers, and German goalkeeper Lutz Pfannenstiel, 27, from Geylang United, each faces three charges of agreeing to accept bribes in exchange for fixing matches in which their teams were playing.

Six hundred Volvo S80 models here will be recalled for their ball joints to be replaced. SM Motors, the local distributor for Volvo, said the S80 sedans are last year's and this year's models, which may have ball joints which could wear out prematurely. A ball joint in a car is a mechanical joint in the steering and suspension system.

A total of 296 out of 397 commercial buildings and private apartment blocks which are more than 25 years old have been checked over the past four days, following a scare over contaminated drinking water. The Ministry of the Environment (ENV) said in a press statement yesterday that of the 296 buildings, 19 were found to have sewage pipes running over water tanks, a design feature which contributed to the contaminated water in Bukit Timah Plaza two weeks ago. Only one of the 19 old buildings had corroded pipes, but the water supply was not contaminated.

Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) officers have impounded the passports of some of the staff of United Overseas Bank (UOB) Asia. A UOB Group spokesman disclosed this last night in response to queries from The Straits Times, confirming rumours that had been circulating in the market for most of yesterday.

According to a survey by Belgium-based Union des Association Internationales (UAI), Singapore is now the world's 5th most popular convention city. The leading convention cities are: 1. Paris, 2. Brussels,  3. Vienna,  4. London,  5. Singapore.

Asia

Hongkong: A young man and woman reportedly committed suicide after they were wanted in connection with the murder of a university graduate student last week, a police spokesman said yesterday. The couple, in their 20s, were found dead on Monday in a village house on Cheung Chau island with a note admitting they had killed 23-year-old Lau Wai Yee.

Canberra: After hearing the results of a review of Australia's involvement with UN committees, the Cabinet announced that it would scale down its contact with the global body. Foreign Minister Alexander Downing said yesterday that from now on Australia would not allow UN committees to visit Australia nor would it meet their requests for information unless there was a "compelling reason" to do so. The hardening of Australia's stance follows recent UN criticism on human rights and environmental issues.

Around the world

London: Two people were seriously injured on Monday as festivities reached a peak at London's Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's largest street festival. Police said about one million people joined the revelry on Monday.

Washington: The US Marine Corps grounded nearly a third of its aviation fleet over the weekend, temporarily suspending flight operations of three aircraft types, including the experimental MV-22 Osprey, officials have disclosed. Its fleet of AH-1W Cobra attack helicopters were flying again by Monday afternoon after undergoing inspections.
