A total of 296 out of 397 commercial buildings and private apartment blocks which are more than 25 years old have been checked over the past four days, following a scare over contaminated drinking water. The Ministry of the Environment (ENV) said in a press statement yesterday that of the 296 buildings, 19 were found to have sewage pipes running over water tanks, a design feature which contributed to the contaminated water in Bukit Timah Plaza two weeks ago. Only one of the 19 old buildings had corroded pipes, but the water supply was not contaminated. Canberra: After hearing the results of a review of Australia's involvement with UN committees, the Cabinet announced that it would scale down its contact with the global body. Foreign Minister Alexander Downing said yesterday that from now on Australia would not allow UN committees to visit Australia nor would it meet their requests for information unless there was a "compelling reason" to do so. The hardening of Australia's stance follows recent UN criticism on human rights and environmental issues.
