Monday
with the Editor: Thanks for the memories!
|
Those of us who grew up in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s
have had the privilege of being around in that period
of time when some of our landmarks, which are no
longer around, adorned the Singapore streets. |
Landmarks, such as the National Theatre, New World
Amusement Park, Odeon Cinema, and Jubilee Theatre (now
Raffles Hotel annex), may seem common-place buildings
to some. But, for those of us who call Singapore home,
these landmarks have found a place in our hearts - for
we grew up in that era of time when these landmarks
were in their heydays. |
We can fondly look back and say to ourselves - Yes! We
were there in Odeon Cinema in the days when fans
cooled the air in the cinema. We spent the weekends at
New World Amusement Park playing Space Invaders and
Table Soccer. We took pictures outside the fountain at
the National Theatre. Don't you simply wish you could
turn the clock around and venture into the past again,
to revisit our Singapore icons and also our own past? |
Well, we all know that is wishful thinking. But, here
at getforme.com, we believe we have a role to play in
getting older Singaporeans to appreciate the role that
these landmarks played in our lives and hearts in that
era of time when we were much younger. |
Therefore, we have started this new section named Thanks
For The Memories, in which we put these Singapore
icons where they rightfully belong - in a place on the
Internet where everyone, whether Singaporeans or
others with a vested interest in Singapore, can surf
by any time of the day and year and get in touch with
their past again, for we believe, these landmarks will
jog their memories and bring to the present
whatever nostalgic experiences they had amidst
the landmarks many years ago. |
And for the younger generation - our children and
their children - we hope by their reading up on these
landmarks, they will better appreciate the Singapore
that their parents and grandparents grew up in. For
this reason alone, we believe our efforts are not in
vain, for we have a vested interest in getting our
children to understand us better through understanding
the Singapore that we as youngsters then partook in
life here. Life is short, they say, so if you have
experiences you wish to share and to leave behind in
our Internet history books, please go ahead, visit Thanks
For The Memories! and leave your ponderings behind
in our Message Forums. |

Birdsongs
& Other Pieces - The Music & Lyrics of Marc
CHAN Yew Jin |
With The
Reverie String Quartet - Clement LIM (violin), WONG Yeang
Chuan (guitar), Tracy CHIA (alto), Nadia TAN (soprano), Dawn
WONG (Alto). |
"Birdsongs
& Other Pieces" is the debut concert of young
Singaporean composer and lyricist Marc CHAN Yew Jin. The title
piece, a fusion between the classical art song and musical
theatre, is a song cycle that celebrates the most enviable
aspect of birds - flight. And coincident with that idea is the
idea of freedom. Some of the songs are settings of text by
various poets, such as Maya Angelou and Alfian Sa'at. The
other songs that complete the cycle have original lyrics by
Marc. The evening will also see the premiere of instrumental
works written in the past year. These include a suite of three
pieces for toy piano, a romance for violin and piano, and four
nocturnes for guitar. |
