|Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
|A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

New teenyboppers forum cum chat here!
Calling all teenagers!
Right here on our website, we have started a new section
specially for you. We have named it Teenyboppers -
an old-fashioned word to describe all of you.
For starters, we have
put up a forum and a chat facility. You are free to put up
messages as well as communicate with your fellow
schoolmates or friends. If you like, you can even name
chatrooms after your school and then get your schoolmates
to occupy them in their spare time. You can also nominate
team leaders. Let us know who they are and we will give
them more say in the running of the place.
We have opened
Teenyboppers to the public, so any teenager from Singapore
or around the world can join in the activities. Of course,
there's no way for us to ensure that the visitors to the
forum and the chatrooms are who they say they are, so we
urge all of you to exercise caution when you are making
friends with strangers virtually. You never know whether
the "teenager" you are liaising with is for
real, or is actually an adult masquerating as a bona-fide
teenager. That "teenager" may have ulterior
motives for getting to know you.
