Apple Pie
on Channel U I guess, by
taking a perceived taboo subject and putting it on the small
screen for parents and students to see, the authorities are
paving the way for parents to come to terms with the fact that
sex education is only taboo in their minds. A generation of
Singaporeans have grown up used to sidetracking this subject
because all along sex education has been sidetracked. But now,
it is receiving national attention and rightly so because our
children now are more independent when we were. They are
definitely more daring to experiment than we were. In my time,
it was rare to hold a girl's hands in public. Now, students in
uniform neck every so often in public areas. So there is a
need to ensure that they do not do the wrong things out of
ignorance! I think the
message is clear - the programme is primed to make us parents
sit up and wake up our antiquated ideas. Of course, one
episode won't be able to do much - many of us might have
missed that episode, and some of us might not have gleaned the
message behind the programme (the programme was in Mandarin
but the recorded voice was in English). So, perhaps, we can
expect more of such storylines in future TV programmes for the
family. Finally,
parents will have to take an active role in educating their
children on sex education. They can't just leave everything to
the school, can they? It wouldn't be fair to the schools,
would it? I mean, when something bad happens, we parents are
rightly to blame. We can't just pass the buck to the school
and the Government. If you
missed that episode, you can watch a re-run. The re-run of the
Apple Pie series happens every Friday at 1.30pm on Channel U.
This re-run is a few episodes behind the current series airing
on Tuesday nights at 8pm. So, if you are game for it, be
patient. Tune in to your TV these few Friday afternoons and
you will soon see what I mean.* *This note was
added after the article was published. The rerun of the
episode took place on Friday 20 Jul 2001 at 1.30pm.
