 DUMPLING FESTIVAL

It's Dumpling Festival Day today!  The Chinese have been making these meat dumplings the past few days. Today, the 5th day in the 5th month of the Lunar Calendar, they will pray and offer them to the gods and thereafter enjoy a delicious meal of dumplings (bachang). Those who can't make them (because of bereavement in the family or because they simply don't know how to make) can get them at local stores - price S$2.50 each! The dumplings usually cost only S$1.20 each.

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

  Hallo everyone

School holidays are over! Today marks the first day of the second semester and students lug their schoolbags back to school after a whole month of R&R.

Actually, today I wish to speak on a slightly sensitive matter - sensitive because from the day I was born till about a week ago, 19 Jun 2001 to be exact, I had not been privy to any form of sex education on TV here in Singapore.

It was, I thought, a taboo subject here. But, last Tuesday, at about 8 o' clock, I was sitting down to my regular dose of typically predictable fare of local Mandarin dramas - this one was Apple Pie, a series for school children. Something happened that made me sit up!

There was a classroom scene in which a teacher was giving a lesson on sex education to his class of lower secondary school students. He played a tape as he taught. A recorded voice came on the air in the classroom to brief the students on the subject. What made my jaws open wide was the part where the recorded voice asked, "Do you want a bigger penis?" It then went on to tell the students to "stop worrying about the size of your penis." And there's more of such things in this episode.

I do not know whether you were affected by what I just wrote here, but to me it was indeed a watershed in the history of censorship here.

The Government has been giving more leeway in the area of censorship in the face of the changing times. This, I think is the first time that a local TV programme which targets young Singaporeans has been allowed such leeway.

Perhaps, this is good for all of us - parents and students altogether. We parents shy away from telling our children about the birds and the bees and hope the time will never come when we have to tell them. Ask me why and my answer is this - it's been like this all along. When I was a teenager, I got the idea this was a taboo subject - the school didn't have sex education in its syllabus and my parents certainly never brought it up. But I managed to grow up without needing such lessons. This year, however, secondary school students have an opportunity to learn about sex education at school as it is now in the school curriculum. Students nowadays mature earlier than we did when we were their age, and it is timely that such lessons are conducted to prepare them for a difficult period in their growing up years. More.....
