Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crabs

  Hallo everyone

Ten days ago, MediaCorp, together with a few partners, launched Singapore's newest newspaper, TODAY, a tabloid targeted at bus and MRT commuters in Singapore.

TODAY is pitted against STREATS, another tabloid which also targets bus and MRT commuters. STREATS, incidentally, is owned by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).

So, we have TODAY and STREATS locking horns in competitive bidding for readers' attention. Both tabloids are distributed free to commuters, and therefore depend on advertising revenue to sustain them.

Interestingly, SPH has been given the licence to run two broadcasting channels under the umbrella of its new SPH MediaWorks. These channels provide healthy competition for MediaCorp, which hitherto has been a monopoly in the broadcasting industry.

However, the public has seen some friction between the two rival groups surface in recent days. A Straits Times reader wrote to the Forum, The Straits Times, to express his unhappiness with MediaCorp's TCS channels for not broadcasting The Million Dollar Duck Race organised by The Straits Times (owned by SPH) on 12 Nov 2000. He had waited in vain for news of the event to hit the television screen that evening. MediaCorp furnished a reply on 18 Nov 2000 explaining that their non-coverage of the Duck Race was due to an editorial judgement made impartially on a day when there were other pressing news events. Excerpts of the letters can be seen HERE.

Looks like there will be more news-making events coming out of the rivalry.

We received our 700,000th hit on 16 Nov 2000!
