ANNEX B

Conditions for Specialist Accreditation

Dentists who already have specialist qualifications will have to fulfil the following conditions in order to be specialist accredited by DSAB.

1.     Those who have been awarded Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (FAMS). Dentists who have been awarded FAMS would have had at least 5 years of post-basic training experience.

2.     Those who have not been awarded FAMS but have undergone Basic Specialty Training (BST) or equivalent and their basic-specialist training and post-basic training experience adds up to at least 5 years.

3.     Those who have undergone a full-time 3 years Masters programme conferred by a recognised institution of tertiary education and have either at least 2 years of post-basic specialist training in a recognised institution, or have SDC-approved restricted practice in that specialty for 2 years.

4.     Those who have undergone a full-time 2 years Masters programme conferred by a recognised institution of tertiary education and have either at least 3 years of post-basic specialist training in a recognised institution, or have SDC-approved restricted practice in that specialty for 3 years.

5.     Those who have undergone a full-time 1 year Masters programme conferred by a recognised institution of tertiary education and have either at least 4 years of post-basic specialist training in a recognised institution, or have SDC-approved restricted practice in that specialty for 4 years.

Those who do not fall under the above 5 categories would be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The DSAB will review all applications and decide who could be accepted into the dental specialists register.
