Holland Village - A Treasure Trove of Memories

      (cont'd)

     Back to FrontPage of article

It is perhaps such a place which makes adjusting to the new life here in Singapore more palatable. So, as a consequence, development of Holland Village over the years must reflect the diverse ethnicity of the place.

It was only natural that by and by more old shop tenants moved out and new ones came in. The handicraft and antique shops are still around in droves, but more and more food outlets have sprouted here -so much so - Holland Village has now become a veritable world food village.

Yes! I'm not kidding you - almost every type of cuisine you find in the world, you can also find here in Holland Village, and that's no laughing matter. At last count, there were more than 35 restaurants and smaller outlets dotting the prewar shophouses around Lorong Mambong, Lorong Liput and Holland Ave. These roads collectively encase the area we know to be Holland Village.

In case you are not convinced, here's a sampling of the food and drink outlets:

Melnik's, Chaplin's Beer Shop, Windmill Food Court, Swensens, Siem Reap, Mr Bean, Yee Cheng Yuen Noodle, Shariff's, Katong Cuisine Seafood Eating, 211 Cafe Bar, Old Chang Kee, Sweet Secrets, Madeleine's Egg Tart, Manpuku Tei Japanese Restaurant, Sushi Tei, Sukhothai, Pho Hoa, Al Dente, Cha Cha Cha, Crystal Jade Seafood Kitchen, Yellow Submarine Cafe, Breko Cafe, La Terraza Da Paolo, Au Petit Salut, Michelangelo's, Sistina Pizzeria, Original Sin, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Coffee Club, Starbuck's, Haägen Dazs, N.Y.D.C., Holland Village Food Court, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, A&W, California Lemon, Subway, Billy Bombers, Country Manna, Wala Wala, Baden-Baden, Tango's, Sole Luna and more......

Notes:(1)

Holland Village was established between the late 1930s and 1945 as a military village, defined as a village in which at least a third of the businesses are dependent on military personnel.

In Holland Village, the early retail outlets were established for the sole purpose of servicing the retail, social and recreational needs of British soldiers and their families domiciled in and around Pasir Panjang Base. This military base, the largest in the 1940s, was located along a 'corridor' between Pasir Panjang and Holland Road.

In 1971, two major events took place:

1. withdrawal of the British Armed Forces from Singapore which saw the repatriation of thousands of soldiers between 1971 and 1976.

2. establishment of the Holland Road Shopping Centre.
