Start Of Road Works For Singapore First Formula One Race

The Land Transport Authority, one of the key agencies involved in preparations for the inaugural Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix next year, has awarded three contracts for road works for the street race.
The three contracts, worth a total of $18.014 million, are awarded to Or Kim Peow Contractors (Pte) Ltd, Sato Kogyo (Singapore) Pte Ltd and Works Infrastructure Pte Ltd.
Works are expected to commence in October 2007 and will complete by May 2008.
Road Works in the City Centre
A series of road works will be undertaken in the city centre, which includes road widening works along Raffles Boulevard from Nicoll Highway to Temasek Avenue.
Other works in the city centre will include modifications to existing roads, such as the removal of road kerbs and traffic islands along the confirmed F1 track alignment.
These road modifications will take place along St Andrew's Road, Esplanade Drive, Raffles Avenue, Raffles Boulevard and Republic Boulevard.
The road works in the city centre will be undertaken by Or Kim Peow Contractors (Pte) Ltd under Contract RD225 for a contract sum of $2.827 million.
Promenade Extension Works
As part of the race track will run through the promenade fronting the seating gallery of the Marina Bay Floating Platform, road works in this area include the widening of the promenade in front of the seating gallery, strengthening of the Stamford Canal, and the construction of a new road on the promenade and above the canal.
The Promenade extension works will be undertaken by Sato Kogyo (Singapore) Pte Ltd under contract RD227 for a contract sum of $5.887 million.
Road Works off Republic Boulevard
To facilitate the start and finish straight of the track as well as access to the Pit Building and the Paddock, there will be a series of road works off Republic Boulevard.
The works will include the construction of a new 1.2km road alongside the pit building that forms the start and finish straight of the track.
In addition, a service road with an underpass for pedestrians and vehicles, connecting Republic Boulevard to the Pit Building will be constructed.
The road works off Republic Boulevard will be undertaken by Works Infrastructure Pte Ltd under contract RD228 for a contract sum of $9.3million.
Traffic Diversions and Impact to Motorists
Advance information will be provided and traffic diversions will be carried out to guide motorists affected by the works. Road works will be carried out during non-peak hours, where possible, to minimise disruption of traffic.
"As we look forward to the Singapore F1 race one year from today, preparation works for this inaugural event have to pick up pace now. As far as possible, we will minimise the impact that the road works will have on motorists and members of the public, while ensuring the road works are on schedule to meet the tight timeframe for the F1 race," said LTA Chief Executive, Mr Yam Ah Mee.
