Singapore Food Festival 2007

Singapore Food Festival 2007 Kicks Off With Giant Chilli Crab Feast

The 14th Singapore Food Festival 2007, celebrating the best of Singapore¡¯s multi-ethnic local dishes, officially opens today (29 Jun 2007) with crabs galore! Guest-of-Honour Mr S Iswaran, Minister of State for Trade and Industry launched the annual festival by tossing in the final and most essential ingredient of crabs into the Uniquely Singapore dish of Singapore Chilli Crab.
Crab lovers are in for a ¡®crab-a-licious¡¯ treat this July at the Festival, beginning with the Singapore TIGER Chilli Crab Festival (29 June to 1 July) at Ngee Ann City¡¯s Civic Plaza. More than 30 stalls will present this Uniquely Singapore crustacean dish, amongst many other local food delights, in a variety of culinary interpretations including Creamy Cheese Crab, Salted and Deep-fried Butter Crab.
The Banana Leaf Apolo Restaurant, known for its South Indian cuisine, will be whipping up a new crab dish topped off with special curry gravy featuring a heady mix of up to nine types of spices. Fara¡¯s Caf¨¦ promises to tantalise taste buds with its Malay version of chilli crab, tangy and spicy with its use of sambal and assam.
Also serving up their best dishes are some of Singapore¡¯s biggest names in seafood including Jumbo Restaurant, Palm Beach Seafood Restaurant Gold Coast Restaurant and Chen Fu Ji.
¡°The Singapore Chilli Crab is a made-in-Singapore dish that is not only popular with Singaporeans but also enjoys a strong following amongst many of our visitors. Hearty and tasty, it is becoming recognised internationally as a Uniquely Singapore dish, being featured at events such as the Singapore Season in London in 2005, Singapore Day in New York's Central Park in April this year and at the annual Singapore Tiger Beer Chilli Crab Festival in Brooklyn. We hope visitors will discover the Singapore Chilli Crab and other delights of our colourful and distinctive food heritage at the Singapore Food Festival this year," said Mr Andrew Phua, Director of Cluster Development, Tourism Shopping and Dining, at the Singapore Tourism Board.
The Singapore Chilli Crab has featured for four consecutive years in the Chilli Crab Chase! which is a promotion where visitors redeem a complimentary serving of this dish at participating restaurants simply by presenting Chilli Crab Chase! vouchers obtained from Singapore Visitor Centres.
He added, ¡°In the visitor surveys conducted last year at main Festival events, we have received very positive response from those who sampled the dish. Over 30 per cent of visitor respondents indicated Singapore Chilli Crab and Black Pepper Crab as their favourite dish. Hainanese Chicken Rice and Satay were their next favourite dishes.¡±
This year, 300 lucky crab lovers will get to savour their favourite chilli crab dish that is perfectly paired with the smooth, full-bodied taste of world acclaimed Tiger Beer for free.
300 kilogrammes of this succulent crustacean will be prepared in what is billed as Singapore¡¯s Largest, Free-est Chilli Crab Feast and given out to those holding complimentary vouchers. For this event on 30 June, complimentary tickets will be given out at Ngee Ann City¡¯s Civic Plaza on both 29 and 30 June from 4pm onwards.
¡°As co-organisers of this year¡¯s festival, we thought that juxtaposing hungry dinners, succulent chilli crabs against the chic and fashionable weekend crowd of Orchard Road on a Saturday would say it, like never before, Singaporeans¡¯ deeply-rooted love for this sweet yet fiery delicacy which has, to an extent, evolved into our food icon,¡± said Ms Michelle Lim, General Manager, Reed Exhibitions, Singapore & Malaysia. Also available during this chilli crab feast would be the world¡¯s acclaimed Tiger Beer.
Said Mr Geran Guerrero, Marketing Manager for Tiger, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore: ¡°The Singapore TIGER Chilli Crab Festival provides a unique opportunity for Singaporeans and tourists to enjoy a tantalising treat of two national icons ¨C the best chilli crabs from top local restaurants perfectly complemented with the smooth, well-bodied taste of world acclaimed Tiger Beer. Similarly, Tiger has been bringing this ultimate Singapore beer-food experience to the world through similar festivals held in key cities around the world. We are pleased to be the official partner of the Singapore TIGER Chilli Crab Festival for the second year running and hope to continue showcasing Singapore¡¯s distinctive cuisine and world acclaimed Tiger globally.¡±
Besides Singapore Chilli Crab, lovers of authentic Singapore food can also expect a gastronomic treat of Singapore¡¯s ethnic cuisines including Hainanese Chicken Rice, Satay and Fish Head Curry at the Singapore TIGER Chilli Crab Festival. Known food establishments like Westlake Restaurant will be presenting their signature braised pork bun as well as Prima Taste which will showcase some of their Top Ten Must Try dishes.
