NAFA presents 'Blank' - School of Visual Arts Degree Show 2006

Source: www.nafa.edu.sg

Emptiness for Endless Creativity
¡°BLANK¡± School of Visual Arts Degree Show 2006 Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Galleries 1, 2 & 3 10 - 14 May 2006 begins from a blank
A blank is not a blank
"Blank slate" is a loose translation of the Medieval Latin term tabula rasa (literally, "scraped tablet"), which refers to the theory that the mind of the individual was born "blank", and that each individual was free to define the content of his or her soul through one's sensory experiences.
In the game of Scrabble, a blank tile is the ¡°saviour¡±, being substitutable for any letter a player desires. In this age of information technology, the blank space provided by Search Engines on the World Wide Web, constantly awaits the users¡¯ initiatives; it is the beginning of endless discoveries and creativities. For the creative artists and designers, the blank piece of paper is where they usually begin their conception of an idea.
Blank is not a state of idleness, of mere emptiness; instead, it is anticipation, the waiting for a world of possibilities to begin.
Creativity begins from a blank
¡°Blank¡±: School of Visual Arts Degree Show 2006 encompasses the creative ideas, processes and outcomes by undergraduates and postgraduates of School of Visual Arts in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).
The theme for this graduation show arises out of a core belief that all graduating students are free to choose their individual lines of creative enquiry, and possess a self-authored mind with an immutable innovative ability to be unique leaders in their specific field of creative specialisation.
The works in the exhibition were developed during their respective course of studies in the School of Visual Arts degree programmes, which are delivered at NAFA and conferred by Loughborough University and University of Huddersfield, both from United Kingdom:
• BA (Hons) Exhibition & Retail Design

• BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting & Drawing

• BA (Hons) Fine Art with Contemporary Writing

• BA (Hons) Graphic Communication

• BA (Hons) Interior Design

• BA (Hons) Multimedia Design • MA Contemporary Practice

Come experience 50 art and design works by creative individuals of these 7 franchised degree programmes:
a spectrum of visual media in Experimental Interaction Design, Book Art, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Mobile Art, Installation Art, Interior & Exhibition Design Models, Graphic Design, Photography, Animation, Video works and Advertising Design.
An event of many firsts
This exhibition showcases the first cohort of graduates from the MA Contemporary Practice programme, which nurtures creative excellence amongst art and design practitioners through independent research, personal inquiry and critical evaluation.
The programme represents NAFA¡¯s leading position as a centre for research and higher studies in the visual arts.
Another first would be the Scholars¡¯ Showcases, an array of creative works solely exhibited by 2 NAFA Scholars, who were the first recipients of NAFA Scholarship, which includes full fee waiver and subsistence allowance.
The Scholarship aims to promote, support and reward creative excellence among students of NAFA. This year¡¯s Scholars in the Degree Show are:
• Mr. Jason Cheo, BA (Hons) Multimedia Design
• Mr. Justin Lee, BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting & Drawing
Carrying on a tradition set in last year¡¯s Degree Show opening, there will be a series of ¡®live¡¯ performance art, this time by NAFA Scholar Mr. Justin Lee, from the BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting & Drawing programme; and Ms. Isabelle Park Young Sook, from the BA (Hons) Fine Art with Contemporary Writing programme. Expect an evening of suspense and surprises!
