Music from an Unknown Source
- 40 gouaches of German artist Sigmar Polke |
¡¡ |
|
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and the
Goethe-Institut are proud to co-organise Music from an Unknown Source
Exhibition by the German Artist, Sigmar Polke. |
The exhibition, curated by Institut f¨¹r
Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa), will open to the public at NAFA Gallery 3 (NAFA
Campus 1, 80 Bencoolen Street), starting 31 Aug till 20 Oct 2006. |
Born in 1941 in Poland, Polke subsequently
settled down in West Germany with his family. He began his career as an
apprentice in a stained-glass factory before entering the Staatliche
Kunstakademie (State Academy of Art) in D¨¹sseldorf. |
Polke is regarded as one of the most
important post-war German artists who had experimented with a wide range
of styles and subject matter, including photography and the manipulation
of photographic imagery. Many of his paintings incorporate manipulated
photographic imagery and Benday dots. |
All created in year 1996, the 40 gouaches
featured in this exhibition are of the same format of 70x100cm. Polke
makes the ¡°dripping and flowing¡± of paint his theme in this exhibition.
This perhaps has got to do with his concerns about how daily life
relates to art, as well as the relationship of reality as contained in a
picture and in actuality. |
The gouaches of this exhibition have
unconventionally long titles- from absurd-sounding household tips like
¡®You can prevent milk boiling over by putting a velvet insole in your
shoe¡¯, to poetics like ¡®The blackness when the moon is rising, the cries
of the night-birds, complaining about being disturbed¡¯, to rhetorical
titles like ¡®How long is a metre?¡¯. |
What Polke is trying to express runs deeper
than these zany titles. This lack of seriousness may seem like an
entertaining diversion, but it may also be the most efficient way to
relate back to the realities of daily life. |
Ms Bridget Tracy Tan, NAFA¡¯s Director
(Gallery & Theatre) sums it up: ¡°Like the artists of his time and
now, (Polke¡¯s) work continues to speak to us from a cacophony of
ideas and arguments, providing the aesthetic intervention, a
beauteous assault on our senses from that unknown, perhaps
unknowable source.¡± |
Music from an Unknown Source will open
on Wednesday, 30 August at 6.30pm. His Excellency, Mr. Folkmar
Stoecker, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany will grace
this exhibition as the Guest-of-Honour. |
