Malaysian artist Toya Lim to
hold exhibition of revolutionary batik art in Singapore |
30 May 每 9 June 2006 |
|
Presented by the Nanyang Academy of Fine
Arts (NAFA), Idyllic Canting 每 Toya*s Batik Art showcases 30 early and
recent works by Malaysian batik artist, Toya Lim (※債捚§輿腦壑). The
exhibition will be held from 30 May 每 9 June 2006 at NAFA Gallery 3. |
Known for his refined figurative batik
paintings of rural lives and landscapes which are without the usual
sharp lines and crackling effects characteristic of the medium, Toya*s
unique techniques have brilliantly synthesised the indigenous craft with
the artistic visions of French Impressionist painters like Seurat and
Signac. |
§As the synthesis of a traditional folk
medium and figurative representation, the Penang-born painter*s skilful
treatment of the medium has, in his own exceptional ways, continued and
advanced the art of figurative batik. The batik paintings by Toya Lim
are not only batiks or solely paintings. His works, which comprises
both, are something we have yet to discover a suitable name for,§ says
Mr Justin Loke, curator for the exhibition. |
Ms Bridget Tracy Tan, NAFA*s Director
(Gallery & Theatre), adds: ※Batik painting for Toya commits him to the
legacy of early Southeast Asian cultural enterprise and brings him
forward into the future. His style of batik painting is truly his own,
inventive by pure labour, exceptional by nature, both visually and as an
object.§ |
Since the 1960s, Toya has held numerous
overseas solo exhibitions in Australia, Europe, the United States and
countries across the region, like Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Thailand. |
Internationally renowned, he had been
invited to lecture, and demonstrate his techniques, in art colleges in
the United Kingdom, such as the University of Leeds, Bradford College of
Arts and St Martins School of Art. |
In 1994, Toya became the first batik artist
to have his paintings accepted for a Christie*s auction. Besides private
collectors from all over the world, his works are also collected by
organisations such as Bank Negara Malaysia, the National Art Gallery of
Malaysia, and the Australia National University. One of his earlier
paintings, ※Mother and Child§ now hangs in the UNESCO Building in New
York. |
Idyllic Canting 每 Toya*s Batik Art will be
officially opened by His Excellency Dato* N. Parameswaran, Malaysian
High Commissioner to Singapore on Monday 29 May 2006, 6.30pm, at the
exhibition venue. |
