At 6.35pm yesterday (14 Mar 2006), Police
stormed a warehouse and rescued from within two Indonesian men, aged 35
and 53. Police received information on 13 March 2006 that the two men
had been kidnapped from their hotel on 10 March 2006. |
During the raid, four suspected kidnappers,
who were Singaporean males aged between 36 and 51, were arrested and a
sum of more than S$10,000/- was seized. |
On 7 March 2006 , the two victims had
arrived in Singapore to meet one of the suspected kidnappers. The
victims checked into a hotel in the Orchard Road area. |
On 10 March 2006 , the suspect brought along
six other men to meet the victims outside their hotel. A dispute ensued.
The suspect alleged that one of the victims owed him some money and
demanded repayment. The victims were then told to return to their hotel
rooms to await further instructions. |
At noon on 10 March, the two victims were
made to check-out of their hotel and were brought away by four of the
suspects. They were brought by the suspects to a warehouse in Kaki Bukit
and told to transfer a sum of money to the suspect. The two victims
called their families in Indonesia to raise the sum. |
On Saturday 11 March 06, the two victims
were moved to a hotel in Changi Road . From then till 14 March 06, they
were watched over by the suspected kidnappers. |
Police were alerted by the family of one of the
victims on 13 March 06 and an operation was immediately mounted by the Criminal
Investigation Department and the Police Intelligence Department. |
The four suspects will be charged in
Court on 16 March 2006 , with Kidnapping for ransom under Section 3
of the Kidnapping Act. If found guilty, they may face life
imprisonment and caning, or the death penalty. |
Police are looking into the involvement
of the other possible accomplices. |
