Convenience Store Robber Nabbed By Police

A 39- year-old Singaporean male Indian was arrested early this morning by police at Yishun Ring Road for committing robbery at convenience stores located in Yishun estate
Since 27 October 2006 to 5 December 2006, a total of four convenience stores located in Yishun estate were robbed by a man armed with a chopper or a foldable knife.
The suspect would confront the sales assistants on duty and rob them at knife-point of their takings for the day. In most of these cases, the suspect was attired in long-sleeved shirts and long pants. To hide his identity, he will cover his face with a T-shirt.
Police Officers from the Investigation and Intelligence Branches of Ang Mo Kio Police Division as well as the Yishun North and Yishun South Neighbourhood Police Centres conducted intensive enquiries around the vicinity in an attempt to identify and apprehend the culprit. The officers also conducted ambushes at various locations where these convenience stores were located.
On 15 December 2006 at about 4.30am, their efforts paid off when a sales assistant in a convenience store alerted the police when she observed a suspicious character loitering outside the shop along Yishun Ring Road.
The officers responded to the call immediately and spotted the suspect behaving suspiciously near the store. The officers then conducted a check on the suspect and found him to be carrying a knife and extra clothings.
The suspect was placed under arrest. Police subsequently conducted a search of the suspect's premises located in Yishun Ring Road and recovered a chopper and a shirt.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 16 December 2006 for an offence of Armed Robbery. If convicted the offender faces imprisonment of between 3 years and 14 years and caning.

Superintendent Tan Chye Hee, Commander Ang Mo Kio Division, thanked the staff from the convenience store for being alert and commended his officers for their hard work and determination which resulted in solving the robbery cases committed by the suspect.
