THE STORYTELLER¡¯S SHADOW |
The ART of Storytelling
through PUPPETRY For 4- to 9-year-olds |
31 Oct - 12 Nov 2006 |
|
The MASTER of Storytellers lives on! Come
October and November, children and adults will be treated to a
delightful array of Hans Christian Andersen¡¯s beloved stories. |
Written by world-renowned puppeteer Richard
Bradshaw, The Storyteller¡¯s Shadow is a tribute to the life and works of
Hans Christian Andersen. |
The production is aptly named after
Andersen¡¯s story of 1846 ¨C ¡°The Shadow¡±. It is a dark tale about a
scholar who is taken over and outlived by his own shadow. It is also a
story about the act of writing itself and his attempt to visualize and
fulfil his own writings about Beauty, Truth and Goodness. |
In many ways, ¡°The Shadow¡± is a reflection
of Hans Christian Andersen himself as his shadow is still being cast
around the world with the continuous popularity of his writing. |
This is a delightful production, which
incorporates several of Andersen's most treasured stories including The
Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl, The Emperor¡¯s New Clothes and The
Princess and the Pea. |
These are classics love and told anew by
each generation. Although these stories were written a long time ago,
their themes are still relevant today. These remarkable stories are thus
excellent in guiding children to listen to words whilst discovering
great literature. |
The Performing Company - Terrapin Puppet
Theatre, Australia |
Based in Hobart, Terrapin Puppet Theatre is
one of Australia¡¯s oldest puppet companies. Established in 1981,
Terrapin creates and presents puppetry of excellence that is easily
accessible and encourages participation. Their productions are designed
for and appeal to schools, families and festivals. |
In recent years, the Company has
raised its profile as a producer of experimental work in puppetry.
Terrapin Puppet Company is distinctly known for putting together
traditional puppet forms with advanced technologies. Examples
include the incorporation of shadow puppetry, and paper cutouts
accompanied by projections and evocative sound scores. |
It is through such re-creation of Andersen¡¯s
popular fairytale classics that makes The Storyteller¡¯s Shadow a unique
and very much original production. Moreover, the production is designed
to encourage audience participation and this makes the whole
presentation very active and engaging for the children. |
Ruby Lim-Yang, artistic director of
ACT 3 International is extremely pleased to be able to present
such a distinct production. |
She says, ¡°Puppets not only bring
stories to life, but they also encourage children to use their
imagination. Puppets are a particularly effective and fun way of
taking your child through a story. You can really bring your story
to life through a puppet show, and the children will be enthralled
by the visual addition to an exciting tale. Children adore
Andersen¡¯s tales and all the twists and turns that are created in
these timeless fairytales will definitely provide an entertaining
and memorable experience for all!¡± |
