Press Release on Performance
By Ethnic Group 1996每2005 |
|
The Ministry of Education releases data on the performance of the major
ethnic groups annually. The objective is to provide feedback to the
communities on how their children fared in the national examinations. |
The following performance charts are attached: |
- Three sets of charts showing the
performance of the various ethnic groups in the PSLE, GCE &O*
and &A* Level Examinations for the past ten years (1996每2005)1.
- Two charts on the percentage of
a primary one (P1) cohort admitted to post-secondary
institutions2.

Performance in PSLE (Charts A1每A5) |
Performance by Overall Measure |
The overall proportion of PSLE students who were eligible for
secondary school has remained above 96% since 2001. See Chart A1. |
Performance by Subject |
The overall proportion of merged stream students who scored A*每C
in English Language and Mother Tongue Language continues to be
high, above 97%, while those in Mathematics and Science are above
80% and 90% respectively. See Charts A2-A53. |
Performance in GCE &O* Level (Charts B1每B5) |
Performance by Overall Measure |
The overall proportion of GCE &O* level students with at least 3
&O* level passes, which has been on an upward trend, exceeded 95%
in 2005. |
The proportion of students with at least 5 &O* level passes
remained high, at above 80%. In particular, the performance of
Malay students improved significantly in 2005. See Charts B1 and
B2. |
Performance by Subject |
There have been steady improvements in the overall pass rates for
English Language, which exceeded 86% in 2005, while pass rates in
Mother Tongue Language and Mathematics remained high (above 94%
and 86% respectively). |
Malay students showed notable improvement in English Language and
Mathematics. See Charts B3每B5. |
Performance in GCE &A* Level (Charts C1每C3) |
Performance by Overall Measure |
The overall percentage of GCE &A* level students who obtained at
least 2 &A* and 2 &AO* level passes including General Paper has
remained above 90% since 2003. See Chart C1. |
Performance by Subject |
The overall pass rate in General Paper has been high, at above
90%, since 2002. The overall pass rate in Mother Tongue Language
continues to be high at above 94%. See Charts C2 and C3. |
Over the years, the overall percentage of a P1 cohort admitted to
post-secondary institutions4, including private educational
organisations, has been on an upward trend, reaching 93% in 2005.

The percentages in these charts are
based on school candidates who sat for the respective
examinations. The percentages are
based on students who were enrolled in P1 ten years ago.
These grades are chosen so that
the results can be compared to those in the past. Prior to 1993,
the pass grades at PSLE were A*每C.
Junior colleges, Centralised
Institute, Polytechnics, ITE, LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts,
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and other private
educational organisations.
