TOPPING IT OFF |
Singapore¡¯s 118 year old
museum reaches structural completion (28 Nov 2005) revealing
refurbishment and expansion plans |
|
Singapore¡¯s oldest museum has a new look
after 118 years. |
Announcing its structural completion with
the Topping Off Ceremony, the National Museum of Singapore revealed its
new façade today (28 Nov 2005) and shared expansion and refurbishment
plans. |
To be launched in December 2006, the museum
spans an area of 18,375 sq metres, and will be Singapore¡¯s largest and
the most modern, complete with world-class standards and facilities. |
A key architectural highlight located at the
new extension is the 16 metre high and 24 metre wide Glass Rotunda, a
modern interpretation of the Dome. |
During the day, the drum serves as the main
entry to the new Singapore History gallery where 360 degrees of
projected images will surround visitors upon entry. At night, the drum
will transform into a lantern, with images appearing on the 'skin' of
the inner drum, visible on the exterior façade. |
Another innovation, the 11 metre high and 22
metre long Glass Passage, functions as the bridge between the old and
new building and is the only modern intrusion allowed by the URA in the
museum¡¯s history. |
As one of the world¡¯s largest outdoor
self-supporting glass structures ever constructed, the frameless glass
'canopy' is entirely supported in glass. |
To enhance visual transparency and
enable visitors the experience of viewing the old building in an
art gallery setting and the grandeur of the Dome up close for the
first time from within the museum, optical glass is used in
various areas of the connector. |
Through architectural innovation,
technological advancement and choice art pieces, the National
Museum of Singapore prides itself on introducing new and varied
ways of presenting history to redefine conventional museum
experience. |
In addition, exhibitions and events
themed on lifestyle, fashion and food will serve to connect people
to history and heritage through ideas which are synonymous with
everyday life. |
¡°The history of Singapore will be told
and retold from multiple perspectives. For the first time in
Singapore, we have on our list of collaborators, talents based in
Singapore, comprising sound designers, interpretive illustrators,
theatre and film script writers, set designers, film directors,
actors, musicians, voice talents, aroma technologists, not to
mention our host of curators, historians, and set builders. We
have in addition the fortune of working with several home-grown
artists in the creative and cultural industries¡±, said Ms Lee Chor
Lin, Director of National Museum of Singapore. |
Premiering in Singapore at the
National Museum of Singapore, a new technology that functions as
an audio companion tool will guide visitors through public
sculpture areas, public spaces, and key architectural structures
of the museum. |
Called WALK THE TALK ™, this platform
is the world¡¯s foremost mobile audio museum explorer that offers
users a choice of listening topics at indoor and outdoor listening
points, in an interactive manner. |
Powered by StarHub, up to 90
simultaneous callers into WALK THE TALK ™ can discover key
architectural structures of the new National Museum of Singapore. |
With a rich history dating back to its
inception in 1887, the National Museum of Singapore has been
closed since April 28, 2003 for redevelopment of the old National
Museum building. |
The new museum redevelopment, coupled
with the surrounding redevelopment of the Fort Canning Park¡¯s
Green Corridor, will help create an ¡°urban corridor¡±, linking Fort
Canning Hill with the Bras Basah area. In addition, visitors to
the museum can expect a wide range of facilities and services
including F&B, retail, films, education programmes and festivals. |
Targeted to re-open in December 2006,
this new generation museum aims to reinforce its role as
Singapore¡¯s national cultural icon. Striving to be the people's
museum, always on the go with festivals and events, the National
Museum of Singapore looks to delight both local and international
audiences. |
