‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’ - a multi-disciplinary exhibition
by local artists & designers will open at the new art space instinc, located
at 271C New Bridge Road, from 5 Feb 2005 to 24 Feb 2005. |
The Chinese New Year celebration in Singapore has
evolved from the traditional customs of our forefathers, who migrated from
China decades ago. |
Through the years, the rich tradition and customs
have been diluted by westernization and influences from our multi-cultural
environment. Many customs have since been lost and are no longer practiced by
the new generation. We have since developed our own local ways of celebrating
the Lunar New Year. |
What does Chinese New Year mean to the Singaporean
who grew up in a multi-racial, multi-cultural society? How do young
Singaporeans view Chinese New Year in the 21st century? Will this traditional
Chinese festival be continually adapted and transformed into a uniquely local
festival? What would be the result of such a change? |
10 local artists and designers (Lynn Loo, Tay Bee
Aye, Yeo Shih Yun, Joyce Chin, Wyn-Lyn Tan, Estonia Tan, Chan Mei Hsien, han,
Zheng Xupeng & Jasmine Peh) will re-examine the meaning of the most important
festival in the lunar calendar and express themselves in their favourite
medium, be it painting, collage, digital art, poem, T-shirt, toy, installation
or video installation. |
Located in Chinatown and set against one of
Singapore’s most historically and culturally significant backdrops, this
exhibition – brought to you by instinc and The Serendipity Studio - will
challenge your pre-conceived notions of the Lunar New Year and its
significance. |
Viewing hours: Tuesdays to Fridays, 12pm to 7pm,
Saturdays, 12-5pm, Closed on Sundays & Mondays. |
