‘Mini Me’ – a mini solo exhibition by local artist
Yeo Shih Yun will open at the new art space instinc, located at 271C New
Bridge Road, from 5 March 2005 to 25 March 2005. |
Mini-i-pods, mini cooper, mini credit cards… seems
like everything is shrinking! Small is cool. Inspired by the world of mini
things, Shih Yun has created two series of works in this exhibition titled,
“mini-me”. |
The first series of 20 works on paper uses
‘Cartiere Miliani Fabriano Paper’ watercolour paper made in Rome, a high
quality paper that is acid free and archival. |
These works on paper are executed with mixed media
consisting of Chinese ink, acrylic, water-colour and letter transfer on 6cm by
3.5cm sized water-colour papers. Shih Yun has chosen paper for its
‘ready-to-use’ quality as it compliments her spontaneous painting process. |
The other series features 10 works of acrylic on
small canvases. These tiny canvases are no bigger than 18cm in length. Shih
Yun’s works are abstract and dominantly feature bold black lines, juxtaposed
with casual coloured compositions. |
Both series of works are inspired by her favorite
artists from the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York in the 1950s;
they are Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. |
The physical energy of spontaneous mark-making
intrigues Shih Yun. The development and execution of these works are
gesturally instinctive and the resulting forms are not preconceived. During
the process, spatial balance is explored to give the elements in her drawing
and painting space to take natural form, to move, and to breathe. |
