Olympic fever is set to hit Singapore in July 2005
as it hosts the most exciting event in its sports history - the 117th IOC
Session where the 2012 Olympic Games host city will be elected. |
The Singapore Organising Committee (SOC) for the
117th IOC Session updated the media on what will take place during the IOC
session, in particular, the events leading to the election for the host city
for the 2012 Olympic Games. |
The announcement ceremony for the successful host
city will commence at 7.30pm on 6 July 2005. The Session will also review the
Summer Olympics programme, each of the 28 sports in the Summer Olympics will
be put to a vote at the Session. |
"This is a historic event for Singapore. 3,000 to
5,000 sports officials, enthusiasts and media will be travelling from all over
the world to our country for the session and let's not forget that more than 1
billion people from around the world will be glued to their TV sets watching
the announcement of the host city for the 2012 Olympic Games from their homes.
Singapore is poised to take centrestage internationally and this will
definitely help boost Singapore's image as a vibrant, cosmopolitan and
happening city pulsating with life and activities." commented Mr Ng Ser Miang,
President of the Singapore Organising Committee for the 117th IOC Session and
IOC Member in Singapore. |
Planning for the session is also moving into high
gear to prepare for the influx of people - IOC members, sports leaders from
International Federations and future Games Organising Committees, officials
and supporters from each of the bid city for the 2012 Olympic Games and some
1,500 personnel from print and broadcast media are expected to be in Singapore
for the 117th IOC Session. |
To cope with the huge arrival of visitors, about
500 volunteers are working on this project to ensure that it is a resounding
success. They are involved in a variety of areas such as hospitality, media
support, logistics and programme coordination and operations management. |
Said Mr Ng: "This is a unique opportunity for
Singaporeans to share their warmth and hospitality as the world watches.
Hosting the event will also enable Singapore to further contribute towards the
Olympic movement." |
Several events would also be held in conjunction
with the 117th session to allow Singaporeans to experience the spirit of the
Olympic movement. |
Olympism is a philosophy emphasising the role of
sports in world development, towards international understanding, peaceful
co-existence, and social and moral education. It is the basis for the Olympic
spirit and values of hope, equality, respect for others, friendship,
fair-play, and inspiration. Whilst the Olympic Games are held every four
years, Olympism is an on-going movement. |
The Olympic spirit will be making its way into
town, not only during the session, but also in the months leading up to and
during the month of July. Special activities will be held in conjunction with
this occasion. |
"No Stamps, No Olympics? Stamps & Olympics: An
Intimate Relationship" |
Did you know that there might not have been the
modern Olympics if not for stamps? |
Singaporeans can find out more about the intimate
relationship between stamps and modern Olympics when a prized collection of
Olympic stamps valued at S$1.5 million and dating back from 1896, will be
specially flown in from the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland for the
first time. |
Besides shedding some light on the history of
stamps and the Olympics, the exhibition will showcase the stamps issued during
the very first Olympics, the rarest as well as the most expensive stamps in
Olympic history. |
A set of commemorative postage stamps will also be
issued on 5 July 2005 to mark the opening of the 117th IOC Session in
Singapore. |
"We're extremely delighted to present this
exhibition as it gives Singaporeans a chance to soak in the spirit of Olympism
by gaining an insight into the intricate relationship between stamps and the
Olympics. Visitors to the exhibition will also discover many interesting fun
facts about this relationship throughout the Olympic movement's long history,"
said Ms Tresnawati Prihadi, General Manager of the Singapore Philatelic
Museum." |
The exhibition will be held at the Singapore
Philatelic Museum from 18 May - 18 August 2005 and is organised in
collaboration with the Singapore National Olympic Council and the Singapore
Sports Council. |
