Happy Birthday Singapore! - National Day Projects supported by MICA

Singapore turns 40 this year and it is time to celebrate!

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) is proud to support a series of exciting projects organised by a host of organisations, such as the Designers Association of Singapore, Phish Communications, the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Aljunied Town Council, North East CDC, the Singapore Hotel Association and the Singapore Kindness Movement, to commemorate the nation*s 40th year of independence.

The central theme, &Happy Birthday Singapore*, reflects the celebratory nature of these projects, which will involve the use of arts, design and heritage to immerse Singaporeans in the National Day celebrations.
In addition to fostering a sense of national pride, these projects will also profile the creativity and artistic vibrancy of ordinary Singaporeans.
The Happy Birthday Singapore projects, in brief, are:
  1. Singapore Express 每 An innovative design education project involving Primary 5 students from schools island-wide; designs will decorate modes of transport and bus-stops during the National Day period.

  1. Heritage Walk: An Enchanting Evening 每 A series of specially marked walks bringing us to heritage sites in the civic district. At the evening launch in August, participants will get to relive our nation*s past, experience vanishing foodstuffs and toys of yesteryear, engage in fun activities, and enjoy an outdoor screening of movies at the carnival end point.

  1. All Things Bright and Beautiful: Prints by Young Singaporeans 每 A printmaking project involving Primary 2 and 3 students, one-of-a-kind prints and collectors* editions will be sold in aid of children*s charities.

  2. Paint Singapore 每 A mural painting project in the heartlands, students and residents team up to paint large murals for display in their neighbourhoods.

  1. Cakes in Kind - An exciting birthday party-cum-charity event for over 200 disadvantaged children and care-givers, featuring 40 specially designed cakes donated by our hotels in celebration of the nation*s birthday.

  1. Screen Singapore 每 A celebration of Singapore films from past to present throughout the month of August.

  1. Decorate Singapore 每 All junior college and tertiary students were invited to participate in a banner and bunting design competition this year. Students were invited to creatively incorporate Singapore*s national symbols in their designs.

More details about the projects can be found in the attached Annexes. For the latest updates, check out http://www.happybirthday.org.sg.
