In an island-wide operation conducted on 2
July 2005 , Police raided 8 locations simultaneously and arrested 15
Singaporean men, comprising 12 Chinese and 3 Malays. They, aged between
20 to 62 years old, were arrested for the distribution of pirated
software and games in the heartland estates. |
The operation which commenced at 2.00pm
targeted 8 shops located in Tampines, Ang Mo Kio, Clementi and Jurong
East. Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers carried out the
operation after extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering. |
The operation has severely dented the
syndicate¡¯s operations. With Police probing deeper into the syndicate to
uncover the perpetrators, including those who operate behind-the-scenes,
more arrests will follow. |
About 89,000 pieces of CD-ROMs, comprising
mainly computer software and games, were seized. The seizure is
estimated to have a street value of S$890,000/-. |
This operation demonstrates Police¡¯s tough
stance on blatant piracy and highlights our continuous enforcement
efforts in crippling syndicates that are involved in the distribution of
pirated software products. |
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tan
Kah Khin, Head of Intellectual Property Rights Branch said, ¡°Such
blatant disregard of intellectual property rights laws will not be
tolerated by the Police. We will spare no effort in identifying and
taking to task perpetrators who are involved. We will also continue to
monitor the situation closely and will not hesitate to mount operations
to clamp down on such illicit activities.¡± |
