The Army¡¯s 1st Commando Battalion, the Republic of Singapore Air Force¡¯s 144 Squadron and the Republic of Singapore Navy¡¯s RSS Resolution have won the Best Combat Unit, the Best Fighter Squadron and the Best Ship awards respectively.

In addition, 10 National Service (NS) units were also recognized for their outstanding performances during the work year.
President S R Nathan and Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean presented the awards to the winners on 1 Jul 05 during the SAF Day Parade at SAFTI Military Institute.
The annual Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Best Unit and Best NS Unit Competition, introduced in 1969 and 1993 respectively, recognise units that have distinguished themselves in the areas of combat readiness, operational proficiency and administrative excellence.
The annual competition seeks to enhance the combat readiness of SAF units and its formations whilst at the same time promote esprit de corps and camaraderie among its soldiers.

The Army
Fighting spirit and tenacity have been instrumental in helping the 1st Commando Battalion win the coveted SAF Best Combat Unit award for the 19th time.
Considered among the SAF¡¯s elite, the unit goes through one of the toughest training regimes and is trained for strike, reconnaissance, infiltration and anti-terrorist missions. 1st Commando Battalion is currently commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC) Luis Phay.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)
Winning the Best Fighter Squadron award is the RSAF's 144 Squadron, commanded by LTC Pek Hong Hwa. This is the second time the Squadron has won the award, previously clinching it in 1995.
144 Squadron operates the F-5S/T Tiger which is a multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft in the RSAF's inventory. Tasked with air-to-air/air-to-ground missions, the Squadron's primary role is in air defence and intercept against all types of threats.

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)
This is the first time that RSS Resolution has won the coveted Best Ship award. Commissioned on 18 March 2000, RSS Resolution is from the RSN¡¯s 191 Squadron and is currently commanded by LTC Lee Swee Ann.
The 141-metre long Landing Ship Tank is built for multi-role operations ranging from logistics support to maritime security operations. With its crew of sixty-five officers and ratings, its primary mission is to support SAF operations in the defence of Singapore's sovereignty.
NS Units
Three of the 10 winners have won the award for the first time. They are: 682nd Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (682 SIR), 588th Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (588 SIR), 275th Singapore Artillery (275 SA). The 6th Signal Battalion has won the award ten times.
The other winners of the Best NS unit awards include 657 SIR, 596 SIR, 550 GDS, 466 SAR, 324 SCE and 9 DS Med Bn. The NS units were assessed on their overall operational readiness during field proficiency tests, mobilisation exercises, as well as the individual marksmanship and physical proficiency tests.
