'Prokofiev War Cycle' Concert

The School of Piano Performance is presenting The Prokofiev War Cycle Concert, the one-night-only Asian premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s emotive cycle of three piano sonatas at the Alliance Francaise’s AGF Theatre on Saturday 10 Jul 2004 at 8pm.

Prokofiev’s fierce yet poignant “War Cycle” reflects his troubled days during the Second World War and the oppressive Stalinist regime.

The three evocative piano sonatas, No. 6 (composed in 1940), No. 7 (1942), and No. 8 (1944), are striking in the dramatic conflict of images and emotions and are widely acclaimed by critics to be the greatest of Prokofiev’s piano works.

The Performers

This inaugural concert is a fresh and highly anticipated offering by the School of Piano Performance (SPP) featuring three of the school’s faculty members, Quek Buchan, Kelvin Chan and Sylvia Ng, capping with an encore performance by Clare Yeo, winner of 7th New York Music Competition.

About Kelvin Chan:

A flamboyant virtuoso, Kelvin Chan’s debut recital at the age of 17 received much critical acclaim and this concert is yet another platform for him to perform in his signature fiery and passionate, sensitive and seductive style. As a resident musician of SPP, Kelvin aims to raise the standard of piano music in Singapore by serving as a model and mentor to aspiring young pianists.

About Sylvia Ng

A frequent recitalist who has made solo concerto appearances in Southern California, Austria and Asia. Sylvia Ng has been hailed professionally by critics as "a pianist who truly charms the audience”. A pianist known for her intense style and astute technical command, Sylvia now focuses her energies and musical experiences on training her students using an innovative method of teaching.

About Clare Yeo

The concert climaxes with an encore by 12-year-old gifted prodigy Clare Yeo, who recently added to her numerous accolades by winning the 7th New York Music Competition. Clare is also the first and youngest Singaporean on the prestigious Julliard scholarship and is currently under the tutelage of Russian master pianist Victoria Mushkatkol. An accomplished recitalist, Clare performs to standing ovations and dazzles audiences with her poise and control.

Come, listen, and be enthralled.
