Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong
officially opened the Changi Naval Base today. During the opening ceremony,
Prime Minister Goh witnessed a sail-past and a naval display put up by the
Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). He also delivered a keynote speech and
unveiled a plaque to commemorate the official opening of the base.
|
The opening of Changi Naval Base
heralds a new chapter in Singapore’s naval history as it provides the RSN an
operational facility that will enhance its capability and operational
readiness and meet its operational demands well into the future.
|
Changi Naval Base is one of the
Ministry of Defence’s most extensive defence infrastructure investments to
date.
|
Jointly developed by the RSN and
the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), the base is a key
operational facility for the RSN and represents the Government’s continued
commitment to investing in Singapore’s long-term defence needs.
|
With Changi Naval Base, the RSN is
well positioned to fulfil its mission of defending Singapore waters and our
vital sea-lines of communication.
|
The completed facilities at the
base include the buildings housing the Fleet Command, the Tactical Training
Centre and the Changi Maintenance Base.
|
The Changi Naval Training Base (CNTB),
now under construction, will eventually house the Naval Training Command and
three Navy schools - the Institute of Maritime Warfare, the Institute of Naval
Technology and Operations, and the Institute of Marine Systems – when it is
completed next year. Construction of the Navy museum will be completed in
2007.
|
Also present at this afternoon’s
opening ceremony were the Minister for Defence, Rear-Admiral (NS) Teo Chee
Hean and Minister of State for Defence, Mr Cedric Foo.
|
|
Changi Naval Base (CNB) is located
in East Changi on reclaimed land. It has a basin size of 128 hectares, a 6.2km
of wharf space and a total area of 86 hectares for operational and training
purposes.
|
Featuring a range of operational,
training and support facilities harnessing information technology and
automation, the new base was designed as an intelligent and efficient
state-of-the-art facility that fully optimises the use of land, water and
electricity through various innovative engineering solutions designed to also
minimise operating costs.
