The Ministry of Education will
accord Tanjong Katong Secondary School Autonomous School status from January
2005. After a stringent selection process, Tanjong Katong Secondary School has
been found to have met the requirements that cover the following broad areas:

a well-rounded education
programme and a good system in place to achieve the Desired Outcomes of
Education;

consistently attained good
achievements in academic and other results;

is well regarded and enjoys
strong parental support and public recognition.

Background:
|
Autonomous Schools were
established in 1994 to provide pupils with quality education within the
framework of a non-independent status but with greater autonomy devolved to
the schools. Autonomous Schools give parents more options in the choice of
quality schools for their children.

Autonomous Schools are given
additional funding to enable them to develop a wider and better range of
programmes to stretch the capability of their pupils. The additional
flexibility and funding given to Autonomous Schools have enabled these schools
to offer their pupils an enhanced teaching and learning environment.

Apart from additional and improved
facilities, pupils also benefit from a more innovative curriculum as well as a
wider and more varied range of enrichment programmes. Autonomous Schools have
been able to provide well-rounded quality education that stretches each pupil
to his fullest potential.

On 12 January 2000, the Ministry
of Education announced that the number of Autonomous Schools would be expanded
from the then current number of 18 to 30 or 40 schools (approximately 25% of
our secondary schools) in the coming years. There are currently 24 Autonomous
Schools. The list is at Annex.
