Loaded - newest men's magazine in town

LOADED is the newest magazine to hit town. If the name is familiar to some of you, it's simply because LOADED is published from the United Kingdom edition of LOADED which has 100 issues already published in the UK. LOADED's inaugural April 2003 issue weighs in at 128 pages thick.

Editor Brent Mackwood says that "the team at loaded takes pride in being Original, Irreverent, Outspoken, Funny and Sexy... Our objective is to provide interesting features, the very latest in fashion, toys, tips and hints to help every aspect of your indulgent life, as well as an abundance of eye candy, all delivered with an attitude far from the norm, an attitude of outrageous humour."

That just about sums up what the LOADED team has in mind for the newest kid on the block. You can see the eye candy upon flipping through the first few pages. Bikini-clad Caucasian ladies flaunt their assets next to an article which has them blaring about what gets them hot and steamy.

Further into the magazine are more serious offerings for the eligible bachelor. These chaps are given tips on how to stand out of the crowd and fascinate women in droves. Then, it's off to the pub for more tips - this time on how to drink yourself stupid with the help of some clever gadgets. Sports - a men's staple - is not forgotten here. Writer Frank Tennyson gives an April update on the English premier League. And F1 - Formula One gets a three-page mention too.

There are many other juicy snaps, such as The Expert's Guide To Bottled Lager, and an interview with Australian Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. The regular sections such as fashion and holidays come at the end of the magazine to add some respite to the heavy reading.

At first look, LOADED's newsstand price of S$5.90 may seem a wee bit high when compared to another local men's magazine - New Man (S$4.00) - which is now into its eighth issue. But, surely its European content justifies the premium over other local men's magazines. However, this emphasis on European content may alienate it from local readers yearning for local content. New Man's April 2003 issue, for example, has interviews with actor Adrian Pang, actress Ann Kok and film-maker Royston Tan - all local celebrities.

Also, Singaporeans may not warm up to the idea of a local magazine having its operations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In fact, items promoted in the magazine sport Malaysian Ringgit (RM) price tags. And its page on stockists lists all these branded names, like GUESS? and HUGO BOSS, with Malaysian contact phone numbers. It's early days yet for telling whether LOADED's formula of loading European content works in drawing in local readers.
