Shikisha 'live' at The Courtyard Sessions

Source: The Centre for the Arts, NUS

Whilst African arts and culture is gaining acceptance and popularity in Singapore, The Centre for the Arts (CFA), NUS will serve up a piece of the action at The Courtyard Sessions on Wednesday, 27 August 2003 at 7.30pm.

True to the spirit of African music expression, audience will not be confined within four walls lined with sound-proof pads for the exclusive Shikisha "Live" concert this year.

Instead, they will experience the uninhibited, open-air ambience that is characteristic of The Courtyard Sessions and be liberated by pure Africa-meets-Asia adrenaline rush throughout the show!

Started in 2000 by CFA, The Courtyard Sessions is a series of Al Fresco style performances that invite audience to pack a picnic and relax to the tunes of good music under the twinkling night sky. An outreach programme to attract arts lovers to the scenic and cozy Courtyard at UCC, it showcases quality acts with a strong focus on music from the contemporary to the innovative.

The free admission concerts are styled to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for the audience to enjoy the proceedings without the usual protocol of a formal indoor performance. Thus far, jazz, blues, electro-acoustic, Celtic as well as Afro-ethnic music concerts have played out to tremendous rapport from audiences.

Now it is Shikisha’s turn to take centrestage at The Courtyard Sessions. Originally from Durban South Africa, Shikisha is a popular trio of women who mix the traditional Zulu-, Sotho-, Xhosa- and Shangaan-dances, chants and drumming of day-to-day tribal life with a combination of deft footwork, soaring vocals and good humour.

Joining them to rouse the audience at The Courtyard Sessions is Tribal Tide from Singapore, a talented four-man group of local and innovative percussionists who will show you how funky fusion music is created by striking hard objects together.

Venue: University Cultural Centre Courtyard, National University of Singapore (NUS). Admission is FREE.
