Singapore Fashion Festival 2003

21 Mar - 6 Apr 2003

The Singapore Fashion Festival, Asia's first consumer-focused fashion event, takes place from 21 March to 6 April 2003. The festival, which aims to establish Singapore as a regional fashion retail hub, features 35 events this year, an increase of 15 over last year's festival which attracted 60,000 visitors. In 2001, there were a total of 16 events and 16,000 visitors.

Festival organiser M.S. Twilight Pte Ltd says the festival costs about S$2.5 million to organise. A key portion of this amount is subsidised by Mercedez-Benz. The other sponsor is Singapore Tourism Board.

Core events are:

From Russia With Luxe - Asia's introduction to Russian fashion czar Valentin Yudashkin

Mercedez-Benz Asia Fashion Week - Mercedez-Benz's important new role in Asian fashion

The Local Hero's Return - Singaporean designer Andrew Gn's first show on homeground

Sense & Sensuality - La Perla's first pret-a-porter in Singapore

International designer labels participating in this year's festival are:

Valentin Yudashkin, Andrew Gn, Zac Posen, Anna Sui, Chloé, Leonard, Kenzo, Etro, Biyan, Vera Wang, See by Chloé, La Perla, Scavia, Kavita Bhartia, Ranna Gill, Anamika Khanna, Madhu Jain, and Anshu Arora Sen

However, Cult French designer Azzedine Alaïa, who had a slot in the festival, has withdrawn his participation. The other participating labels are:

Topman, TopShop, Miss Selfridge, G2000, U2, U2 Woman, Warehouse, Christofle, Evnur Solid Silver and By Terry

The venue for the festival's core events is St James Power Station, a disused power station built in the 1920s. The power station is located in Keppel Road, next to the gateway to Sentosa.

Shopping centres taking part are Scotts Shopping Centre, Metro, Paragon, The Heeren, Tangs, Wisma Atria, Plaza Singapura, Pargo Bugis Junction, Jurong Point and Centrepoint.

Friday's News

Local

The 20-km underground North-East MRT line may start in May or June, instead of April 2003. Transport Minister YEO Cheow Tong told journalists yesterday "From the look of things, I don't think the mid-April target will be achievable." The North-East line has 16 stations along its route from Punggol to the Harbourfront (formerly World Trade Centre). (H7)

The new S$200 million National Library building in Victoria Street will house a new Drama Centre. The centre will have a 642-seat theatre and a 120-seat black box, said Mr David LIM, Acting Minister for Information, Communications, and the Arts in Parliament yesterday. The centre is scheduled to be completed in late 2005 while the library will open next year. (H8)

Insurance giant AIA says it will honour the terms and obligations of its so-called "critical year" policies and has set up a special hotline at (65) 6248 8211 and a Web site, www.aia.com.sg, where customers can get information and register their questions. (A20)

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said yesterday it is delaying, by three months to July 1, the start date of the "cooling off" or cancellation period for unit trusts so that fund managers can comply with it. (A19)
